Biography
The gatekeeper
Clan sentry who watches all who enter the amber city from her perch above the entry tunnel. Elegant and serious, she remains motionless at her station, using her aura-reading abilities to determine who to allow entry. When need be she glides down gracefully and freezes intruders in place with ice magic. She covers her body with a veneer of clear ice in delicate, fractal patterns and long lines of snowy sparkles.
Fira hatched from a lone egg found lying in the northwestern reaches of the Southern Icefields. Foxglove, the clan's liaison to allies in Ice territory, collected the egg from an abandoned nest and took it back with her on her long journey back to the Amber Kingdom. Foxglove soon produced a clutch of her own and placed the ice egg in her nest of softly glowing light eggs. A noticeably lanky and oddly fire-like Tundra hatched with the gentle nudging of ice magic helping her break through her frozen shell. Her coloration and proportions indicate that her parentage may not be entirely Ice or Tundra.
Fira aged more slowly than her nestmates. She reached typical hatchling milestones at a rate far more typical of the clan's Skydancer younglings than its Tundras. Although lagging behind her siblings in physical and social development, Fira's magic manifested not long after she opened her eyes. She learned to run and climb on slick sheets of ice spreading out from her feet; she froze flies out of the air with pinpoint-accuracy puffs of deathly cold breath.
Her older siblings loved her as though they were blood relatives and were so proud that their little sister was such a special and talented baby. The older younglings, all Snappers, would carry the small Tundra on their broad backs and slide down hills and across the Sunbeam River on a slick layer of ice. In the summer, Fira would form soft snow out the air and let it fall on them all when the sun grew hot. She would freeze falling leaves solid and toss them like flying discs in the autumn. Winter time was her favorite, and she loved making tall, spiraling ramps and towers out of snow and ice. When her older siblings grew into their bulk and muscles and began testing their strength against each other, the small and frail Tundra would create clever obstacle courses and slippery terrain to test them.
When they had begun to reach adolescence and Fira had not yet learned to glide, they became protective of her out of worry that she would be bullied and ostracized. Fira grew frustrated and withdrawn: she knew she should be developing into an adult, but her body was small and frail despite the strength of the ice magic living within it. Her mind had eventually started to develop-and rapidly, at that- but she often felt like an adolescent trapped in a child's body. Her older siblings were making plans to wander Sornieth or leave to serve The Lightweaver, but Fira could not yet fend for herself and would have no choice but to remain in the Amber City.
It was during this time that Foxglove and her mate Locksteel asked a sage for advice on helping their youngest child meet her fullest potential. The sage studied Fira's magic, held her gently in their huge claws, and concluded that her development would halt entirely unless she took the form of a Skydancer. Fira balked; a scroll with the magic to change not just her shape but her soul costs more than what her family possessed.
