My Dearest Dietrich,

By the time news of my departure reaches you in The Southern Icefield, I'll be long gone from the Bloody Sun Clan. Does it surprise you that father allowed me to leave? Compared to his harsh handling of you and holding mother captive, you'd think his kindness towards me was a blessing. I could see the envy on your face as he taught me to hunt. At least you knew what to expect; I lived every moment wondering how long his kindness would last.

I chose to depart in the company of a male Imperial. You don't know Gharil, and truthfully neither do I. I spotted him hunting North of the clan. At first I was just passing by, but I became captivated by the way he savagely slaughtered his prey. It was the first time another of our kind has frightened me as much as father; it thrilled me. I thought I'd taken care to conceal my presence, but he called me out. I stepped forward and prepared for a fight. He wiped the blood from his maw and then turned his back to me! I was angered at the insult and prepared to attack, knowing full well I was behaving like father would have.

'Is that really what you want?' he asked. That single question immediately calmed my rage. 'I want to go with you,' I replied, surprising myself. If he was surprised he didn't show it. 'I return in three days; be ready.'

I spent those days trying to decide how to tell father I wanted to leave. I planned to do it face to face and not mention Gharil; he appeared to be strong, but father would issue a challenge and destroy him. It was obvious that father suspected something though. During our last conversation he told me love was important to pursue. I nodded; if I'd said anything on the subject he'd be able to hear my insincerity immediately. He ended our talk by saying very loudly that he'd personally deal with anyone who hurt me. I expected him to then seek out Gharil and fight, but Father said no more and I was allowed to depart.

Gharil met me a safe distance away from the clan and we've traveled for two days. Tomorrow we will part ways once we reach the Labyrinth. I keep telling myself that Gharil is a means to an end and nothing more, but at the same time I've begun thinking up ways to keep him for myself. I believe I understand Father a bit better now and fear his madness runs deeper in me than I thought.

I tell you all this because who else do I have to tell?
Lamia

“One more day and we'll be at the Labyrinth. Are you ready to go?” Gharil stood in the entrance of the small cave Lamia spent the night in. The luminescent mushrooms of Wispwillow Grove made it impossible for her to sleep outside.

“I'll be out in a moment.” Lamia shredded the letter, disgusted at the weakness it showed. She grabbed the biggest clean piece and wrote I'm not sure what love is anymore, Dietrich. Stay safe. She pulled from her traveling pack a rose she'd magically preserved; between its thorns she carefully wrapped the note. She tied the bundle to her Sunspot Clouddancer's leg and whispered, “To Dietrich.” The clever creature would find her brother.

The Clouddancer launched itself into the air as soon as Lamia exited the cave and quickly disappeared into the gloom above.

“What was that?” Gharil asked.

“A confession.” The glow from the mushrooms cast an eerie light on Lamia's face. She launched herself into the air and took off towards the Viridian Labryinth.

In response to her letter, Dietrich sent a single red rose in return.
