Biography

Pendranox
The Trainer

Theme Song: Starfall - Two Steps From Hell

“It's my job to make sure you don't get killed, and believe me, you'll be even more upset if I fail than I will.”

Pendranox runs the clan's fighting pits, training and preparing the young dragons of the clan for battle. Although the unnamed clan prefers to avoid open warfare when they can, taking measures to keep them from breaking out and threatening the Ashfall Waste before they can begin, that doesn't mean that the clan members are not expected to be able to fight. Even a thief or an assassin who works by stealth may find themselves in a tight corner someday, one that they need to cut their way out of. Pendranox ensures that they have the skills they might need to do so. Even if they never have to use them, she'd rather they be accomplished but unsung fighters, than unskilled and dead.

Pendranox is a strict taskmistress, but a fair one. She doesn't allow her pupils to slack off in training, and has an eagle eye for anyone fooling around, but neither does she push anyone beyond their limits. If one of her pupils is genuinely struggling, she is quick to help them, identifying what their difficulty is and showing them how to overcome it. If one of them reaches exhaustion more quickly than the others, she'll assign them exercises to build up their stamina, but let them take a rest. She has no time for students who pretend to be bad at something so they don't have to do it, but she has a surprising amount of patience for genuine mistakes, and is willing to show them the correct way as many times as it takes for them to master it. She's not just training them to fight, she's training them to stay alive. By the time they leave her claws, they'll be able to face whatever dangers they come across and come out not necessarily unscathed, but still alive.

Pendranox is a seasoned veteran herself, a former mercenary captain who settled down with the clan. She has plenty of stories about the battles she's been in, from interclan wars where hundreds of lives hung into the balance, to duels over honor. She also has the scars to go with each story. Although she makes them sound thrilling, she focuses on the death and injuries as much as the glory and heroism, never glossing over the danger and the cost of fighting. She believes that the cause the clan fights for, the safety of their home region, is a worthy one, which is why she aids them. She wants the dragons she trains to be able to make their own decision about whether the cause they might be putting their lives on the line for is truly worth it. She's seen the way a charismatic leader or a stirring speech can make others eager to charge into battle, but she's also seen them falter when they stand in the fray and realize what they got themselves into, a danger to themselves and their fellow warriors alike. Someone who truly believes in what they fight for will never falter, and those are the fighters she strives to train.

Pendranox herself is a surprisingly charismatic leader, and capable of giving the kind of speech that made her own troops charge into battle, back when she still led her mercenary band. You wouldn't think it to hear some of her younger students grumble about what a stern banshee she is, but those who've been able to keep themselves alive thanks to her training, and the few members of her old band that settled down in the clan with her, all speak very highly of her. Even though she no longer wears the rank of captain, she still finds the cloak of authority hard to shed, and can seem very formal when she first meets anyone, especially those of higher rank than her. Her students certainly think of her as a strict drill sergeant, and she'll admit that she sometimes forgets not to bark orders like her students are troops on a battlefield. However, once she relaxes around someone, they'll see the magnetic side of her, a charismatic personality that draws other like a moth to a flame, and makes others eager to throw in with her and follow her.
