"One day, you will meet the person you love, and you will be complete."

Sinclair had always found himself entranced by stories of romance and fairytales that told of true love, and he spent days pining away, daydreaming of true love and happy endings. Eventually, the stories he sought in books were not enough, and he decided to set off into the world in search of love that he could call his own.

“Do not go,” his clan leader warned him. “The world is not a story, and happy endings are only found in books.”

“But I must go,” Sinclair insisted. “I must find someone dear to my heart.” He pleaded passionately for his exit, and in the end, though reluctant, his clan leader let him go. With his head wrapped in fairytales and happy endings, Sinclair set off into the bright world under the shining sun, and went off on his adventure.

Sinclair traveled all over the world, and saw places of great beauty. To him, no task was gruelling, and no place ever ugly. The world was bright and beautiful to him no matter what happened, rain or shine, thick or thin. When he was insulted, he simply thought of it as a joke. When he was made fun of, he laughed along. Sinclair was the perfect romantic, and nothing anyone did could change him.

But change comes to everyone and everything, gradually if not rapidly. The change that came upon Sinclair was slow in its coming, but horrible in its wake. For it took only months for Sinclair to finally meet his match — a band of road robbers.

Sinclair had not trained himself to fend off dragons hungry for his blood, and his gentle, lucid words were of no use against bandits used to taking what they want. They robbed him of all his possessions, beat him up thoroughly, and left him hanging by a thread on the side of the road. And even so close to death, Sinclair pleaded them for his possessions, even going as far as asking them for help. The bandits paid no attention to him, and as they walked away chortling, Sinclair’s vision faded.

When Sinclair woke, he was in a small burrow, and his entire body burned like fire. At first, he had fuzzy memories of what had happened, but when he remembered, tears began streaming down his cheeks, fresh with pain.

Movement stirred the edges of his vision, and a smaller dragon appeared in front of him.

“Don’t,” she said, voice rough, but wrought from gentleness. “Drown in your own tears.”

Sinclair choked down a sob as the other dragon wiped away his tears. His saviour’s face became clear to him, and in that instant, he was lovestruck.

She was a Nocturne dragon, tiny in comparison to him, but within her, he saw his everything. Her body was scarred from various fights, but her eyes were bright and beautiful like the stars in the night sky. Sinclair forgot his pain and his misery. All he could remember were the happy endings in every story book he had ever read.

“Don’t drown in your own tears,” she repeated once more, soothingly.

She did not tell him her name, nor did he need one for her. She was too beautiful, too perfect for a name to sum up. She healed him with songs of magic and sweet-smelling poultice, and took him out for walks to regain his strength. She let him lean on her, speak to her, and tell stories to her. She was quiet and accepting, and she seemed to find joy in his company as well.

Eventually, Sinclair fell into routine that felt familiar. Everyday, he would wake up next to the Nocturne’s nest, and he would bumble outside for a quick morning walk and hunting trip. He’d bring back his loot, and would share it with his love. The two would frolic about in the forest for a while, playing. Or at least, it was so for Sinclair. The Nocturne dragon wasn’t exactly of a playful personality, and preferred to gather herbs instead of frisking about. But that didn’t matter to Sinclair. All that mattered was that she looked at him, in the eyes, and smiled — and her smile was all he needed.

VMZyPWQ.png One day, on his normal morning walk, Sinclair found a stranger in the forest that the Nocturne dragon cared for. It was a Mirror dragon, cloaked in dark robes.

“I am looking for a Nocturne dragon that lives in this forest.” The Mirror dragon said, smiling gruesome teeth. “I owe her a favour, and would like to return it. Do you know where I can find her?”

Sinclair looked at the Mirror dragon, and saw nothing but a friend of his love. He did not notice how her eyes glowed maliciously, or see her hidden smile. All the evils that were there, he was blind to them. He led the Mirror dragon to his love, who was gardening in the small plot outside her lair.

Without warning, the Mirror dragon lunged, and the Nocturne dragon was taken by surprise. Twice the Mirror dragon’s claws dug through flesh, and the Nocturne dragon’s left eye was ripped out. Sinclair stared, horrified, terrified, unable to move.

“Please…help…me…” The Nocturne dragon pleaded as the Mirror dragon pounced on her. Sinclair felt fear run through his body. He remembered his tussle with the bandits, and remembered his wreck of a body after. He was paralysed, and in his hesitation, the Mirror dragon tore into his love’s neck.

The Nocturne dragon, born to fight, was quick to react. As soon as she saw that Sinclair would not move, hatred consumed her and she was determined to survive. As the Mirror bit into her, she turned tables and ripped into the Mirror’s stomach, gouging out huge chunks. Disregarding her own torn neck, she jumped upon the Mirror dragon, pinning her down completely, spraying blood as she dug in and clawed until all that remained of the other dragon were torn pieces.

Sinclair was horrified by his love’s bloodied form, and he rushed forward as soon as the Mirror was no more. But the Nocturne dragon would not have him. Her fangs flashed once, and Sinclair felt searing pain flare through him. He stumbled backwards, and a powerful blow dealt to his wings made him stagger back and collapse.

“I’m sorry!” He begged. “Please…please…”

“I healed you and you destroyed everything I loved.” She growled. Blood dripped from her ruined eye. “Why? Was it all just a ploy, set up to kill me? I should’ve suspected such a cloud-brain coward like you to be a traitor."

“Please —“

“Do not plead me, you heartless coward!” She snarled. “You fooled me once, you will not do so again!"

She did not turn to look at him as he laid there, broken, tears seeping down his cheeks. She took flight, wings stirring up gentle gusts, breathtakingly beautiful in the amber sunset. He chased after her, sobbing, but he could not fly.

“Stay.” She said, and those were the last words he heard from her.

Sinclair crumpled down on the cliff, crying and alone.

Some months after, Clan Thornshield received an unexpected visitor at their doorsteps. It was a heavyset Imperial dragon, scales marred and body scarred from fighting. He sat down near the entrance of the clan lair, which looked over an expanse of the sea, and sat for a long time, until finally, the healer of the clan, Savixia, approached him and asked for his name. He answered her, and told her that he was a weary fighter searching for a clan that would take him. She warned him that Clan Thornshield was a place for mercenaries and fighters with no room for the weak and helpless.

“If you are a coward, or should you be weak, you will not find a place here easily,” she said, voice hard.

“Mercenary work,” he said in a monotone drone. "Seems fit for a heartless dragon like me.”

“Pardon?”

“It’s nothing.” he said, his voice so quiet he might’ve as well said nothing at all.

Savixia studied him, and saw that he would be useful to the clan. She nodded to herself, and spoke up. “You should come in, then. it’s getting late."

Sinclair looked out over the sea, eyes emotionless.

“You’re right.” He said finally. “It’s getting late.” He turned away, and Savixia thought she saw something sparkle across his cheek, but he turned and his face was lost in the darkness.

Wherever you are now, wherever you will go — don’t drown in your own tears.
