Housewife COMMONER

[ HARD-WORKING | HOPEFUL | OBEDIENT ]

"Lakka-trees ripen two by two
And mandarin-ducks die side by side.
If a true-hearted girl will love only her husband,
In a life as faithfully lived as theirs,
What troubling wave can arrive to vex
A spirit like water in a timeless well?"

A rush of water overtook the floor as she dumped her washbin over. She’d removed the tatami mats of her residence and rolled them up neatly and set them against the wall. She’d opened the screen door to the parlor, allowing the occasional wind to flare up. The day outside was gorgeous; the birds were chirping, and the skies were a beautiful array of blues. There was a pit-patter of feet on the ground as she returned to her well out back to re-fill her washbin bucket. She put her hands over each-other on the pump of the well, pushing down to siphon up the water. The well sputtered and coughed at first, unable to bring any up, but just when she feared that they were out, her bucket filled with a sudden spurt of water. She couldn’t help but grin at her victory.

She dipped her scrub brush into her new substance, water mixed with cleaning solution, and went to work cleaning and scrubbing at the floor on her knees. She wanted the place to be spotless when her husband returned. Her gut wrenched at the thought of “when he returned.” She missed him terribly each and every time that he went away, but she knew that he had to. She promised herself that when he did come home, like she always did, she’d prepare a satchel of all of his favorite foods to send him off with on his next adventure. She’d cut out carrots in the shapes of hearts to put over his rice so that when he stopped for lunch, he’d be able to remember her.

She loved him more than anything in the world, and if that meant working tirelessly to prepare for his return, then she was willing to keep up the routine every week. The times he was around made up for all of the time that he was gone – When he would walk through that door, pick her up in his arms and spin her around before setting her down again, when the two would share their affections once more. She would be able to see him eat her cooking and praise her on how perfectly she can steam rice or pork buns. She always cooked her heart out for him; you’d think that they were having a feast with the amount of food she’d cook to impress him with.

The floor had been thoroughly scrubbed, and now all she needed to do was to draw up some water to wash away what was left of the soap and suds left behind. She returned to her well, but found that this time, it was even harder to push. She put all of her weight into the handle, only to have it push down, and for her to struggle to pull it back up again. She leaned over and gazed down the well, but all she could see was the darkness on the other end. “It must be out,” she said, her voice a breathless whisper. The only other way to get water was to visit the community well in the village’s square. However, instead of being disappointed, this gave her a wonderful idea.

Her bucket was full of the water recently acquired from the well, but being so close to the imperial village’s square, but it also put her right beside the marketplace. Craftsmen pushed their wares, fishermen had today’s catch for sale, and farmers both had out their meats and vegetables. As always, as well, fresh rice was on the menu. But none where what she was seeking; rather, she was seeking something that she had saved up for years for, putting away penny by penny out of her grocery fund. She’d seen it catch the eye of her dear Rai on many occasion before, and she couldn’t wait to see his excitement and the love in his eyes when it was his-
