The Broken-Hearted Spark
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN LOVE? HORRIBLE ISN'T IT? IT MAKES YOU SO VULNERABLE. IT OPENS YOUR CHEST AND IT OPENS UP YOUR HEART AND IT MEANS THAT SOMEONE CAN GET INSIDE YOU AND MESS YOU UP. Her father was an explorer and cartographer, her mother a curious Arcane willing to follow him anywhere. Bedwyn was born in the Lightning Farm, one of many in a large family. She was Lightning through and through, with a heavy dose of her mother’s thirst for knowledge and her father’s friendly, wandering spirit. From the moment she could pick up a tool, she was inventing and deconstructing. She needed to create, but she also needed to know how things worked, what made things tick. She also needed to shine. Her mother, bless her, did her best, but Bedwyn was her thirteenth hatchling and not the last Magenta would have. Once Bedwyn was old enough, she left the harsh Shifting Expanse and began to travel, looking for a place to call her own. It was in the Starfall Isles, birthplace of her brilliant mother, that she finally settled down. With her own particular brand of magic and a keen mind, Bedwyn was able to use the arcane energies with the technology she had learned in her home. She created many inventions and a few even worked. Her genius and passion caught the attention of Water coatl named Sabel. He was handsome, intelligent, and mysterious. Their romance was a whirlwind and before long they’d brought four hatchlings into the world, their daughters Penny, Nasrin, and Karmine, and their son Alani. They loved and supported each other’s passions as they raised their beautiful family. Time passed and it seemed that Bedwyn had found perfect happiness. That dream was shattered when Sabel never returned home one night from a fishing trip. Days later, his boat was recovered, splattered with dragon’s blood. His body was never found, but they all knew he was gone. Bedwyn was devastated, but she had to stay strong for her children. She threw herself into her work, driving herself through the pain, just praying one day she might heal. It seemed, eventually, that she did begin to. She allowed another, a Shadow-born Skydancer named Kerowyn, to woo her. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, she was smiling again, laughing even. Bedwyn allowed herself to be caught up in his charms and before long she had a new clutch, two eggs. They hatched to reveal her sons, Sull and Sonchus. This happiness was short-lived. She discovered, just after her sons were born, that Kerowyn’s heart had never belonged to her like he’d promised. He had a mate and children, an entire family he returned to when Bedwyn, screaming, told him never to come near her and her children again. She nearly sliced him open with her deadly curved talons, but he managed to get away. She hasn’t heard from him since, but has heard that he has had more children with his mate. She pretends she isn’t bitter about this. Her older children did not judge their mother for her mistake, stepping up to help her with her two curious, energetic hatchlings, even though they were beginning to raise families of their own. When Sull and Sonchus grew old enough, they did not linger like their siblings had done. Karmine, her youngest daughter with Sabel, heard the Arcanist’s call in a way Bedwyn had never truly heard the Stormcatcher’s. She was exalted into his ranks. Sull and Sonchus followed her noble path. Broken-hearted, but proud of her children, she now was free again for the first time since she’d left home. She loved her remaining children and her many grandchildren, but she was not old and she was not ready to retire. This place held too many painful memories and, untethered by the departure of her youngest hatchlings, Bedwyn left again, though she did not wander as far as she had in her youth, traveling to her father’s home, the Windswept Plateau. |
