B I O G R A P H Y

______ Evangeline had been sitting in a cluster of other hatchlings for what seemed like forever, a small tag hanging around her neck labeling the price for which she could be taken from the rest and carried back to a clan, to either become a respectable member of their ranks or to become an exalt in the name of whatever god said clan served. There were several pens for small hatchlings like her, with small prices written on their blandly-colored tags; not far away, adults with similarly small prices were sitting on the ground, looking unhappy and as if they'd rather be anywhere else. Beyond them were less prison-like pens, holding hatchlings with better matching colors, or prettier markings; these had large, brightly-colored tags dangling from their necks, declaring high prices. These hatchlings were rarely sent off to the deities.
______ Maybe, if she were one of them, she'd be out of here by now, flying off into a glorious future filled with happiness and parties and beautiful, thick, silky adornments and smiling, happy dragons.
______ In her cage, there was a young guardian hatchling named Bideng. Bideng's coloring was clashing and vivid, and Evangeline, though she tried to be polite, didn't want to spend too much time looking at him. His colors hurt her eyes. Bideng, it turned out, was also quite mischievous, and spent most of his time trying to figure out how to escape. Without fail, before he got too far, he would be nabbed by one of the adults who managed the market and placed back in the pen.
______ Bideng was trying his hardest to get a couple of other hatchlings, a tundra and a very unimpressed young skydancer, to help him climb out over the edge and "create a distraction" while he escaped. The skydancer was scowling, wings folded tight to her back, turned away from Bideng as if to say "here's what I think of you". The tundra, meanwhile, looked only too happy to help, and was already bouncing in place.

______ Evangeline felt bad for Bideng, so she volunteered to help him. He explained that once he got over the side of the cage, they were to cause chaos until all the nearby adults were distracted in trying to stop them.
