Queen Valentine, a goddess among mere dragonkind, savior to her allies and a demon to those who oppose her. Beware of provoking her, and if you do it is best to beg for her forgiveness, lest her great and terrible wrath be upon you. The Queen was born an outcast in a clan of plague dragons. Upon seeing the fire in the young hatchling's eyes, the leader of the clan raised Valentine as her own, determined to see her grow to be a strong fighter, and perhaps someday the next leader of her people. Before long, however, the plague queen realized that the young hatchling had too much fire. Valentine didn't wish to wait until her queen died before taking power. Instead, she rallied a group of dragons to overthrow the queen and seize the throne for herself. The plan failed, and resulted in the deaths of three of her clanmates, and Valentine's exile. Valentine, unwilling to sit by and wait for the elements to kill her, eventually made her way to the clan of her distant cousin, Sultana. Upon her arrival, Valentine discovered that Sultana's father had recently been killed in battle, leaving her young cousin ready to assume the throne. Taking advantage of the opportunity, as well as her cousin's hospitality, Valentine was taken in by Sultana, who took pity on her famished and dejected cousin. By the next month, Valentine had seized her cousin's position, and the adoration of the people. The dragons of the Aespana faction grew to adore the skydancer's vigor and passion. Valentine was able to convince the Aespan people that her cousin was unable to rule, and had been dishonest with the treasury; sending lavish gifts to her closest friends and letting the poor go hungry as a result. Sultana, seeing no other choice, fled her home, eventually finding her way to the home of the sorceress Morgana, where she became the nocturne's apprentice. |

Years passed, and the Aespana Faction's wealth and power were increasing exponentially. Proclaiming herself as High Queen, Valentine had led her people to their Golden Age. She had everything a dragon could wish for; money, power, and the adoration of every dragon in her faction. But it wasn't enough. Valentine could see that the neighboring factions had begun to notice her kingdom's swift climb to the top. They whispered to themselves worriedly; if this self-proclaimed Queen could make a kingdom so powerful within a few years, what else would she do? What was to stop her from taking their lands to add to her own empire? And they were right. Before long, Valentine decided to make it so her kingdom would be the one most feared, most respected. She assembled an army of dedicated, well trained soldiers to sweep through the surrounding lands, to drive out the scattered smaller clans and claim the territory in her name. The small, scattered groups of dragons were no match for Valentine's legion. Looting whatever towns they could find, the soldiers brought back treasure and wealth beyond count. Valentine built up her cities, ordered and oversaw the construction of countless buildings. Many of them served to keep her people happy. She built theatres and marketplaces to draw her people's attention away from the havoc she was causing to her neighbors. It worked perfectly. She built herself an enormous golden palace, and her reputation as the most powerful ruler in the land grew and grew. But lastly, she built a coliseum. Prisoners and criminals alike would fight bloody battles for the amusement of the queen and her people. Sure, there were plenty who thought it was cruel, but the queen did an excellent job painting the fighters as criminals who deserved nothing less. Hostages brought back from invasions, thieves, murderers or simply dragons bought cheaply at the auction house were all brought here as captives, doomed to fight until their death as the Queen and the cheering crowd watched. There were rumors that those who survived long enough were rewarded greatly by the Queen, even given their freedom. But no one thus far has lived long enough to find out. Many dragons work for the Queen in some way or another. She doesn't particularly consider any of them as 'friends,' but rather 'allies'. They have kept their peace with one another thus far, but that peace is not guaranteed. The spiral Sharkey works as an assassin and a spy. If Her Majesty has anyone in particular that she seems a threat, she sends the jet-black spiral after them, either for information, or to eliminate the threat. Aimless is the Captain of the Elite, the military force that enforces Valentine's command throughout the entire land. He is, perhaps, the closest thing to a 'friend' Valentine will ever have. She also works alongside Jasper, giving the plague sorceress protection in exchange for poisons, potions, and frightening golems for use in the coliseum. The guardian Samedi is in charge of training the coliseum recruits, and is also Valentine's personal guard. However, in his heart, Samedi despises the wicked queen, always looking for the chance to escape and taste freedom once more. Knowing the queen's ways, however, any attempt at that would most certainly result in a violent death. |
