"Come with me, traveller. I will guide you home."

Kiera was once a noblewoman of Umbra, known for her bright smile and charming nature. Despite her weak constitution and frequent sickness, she enjoyed high society: masquerades, a common fixture of Umbran nobility, were her favorite events to attend.

It was at one of these masquerades that she won the heart of Umbra's king--and he won hers in turn. They were wed soon after, and they were happy. Neither spoke much, but what few words they exchanged held the weight of a million conversations; she understood him as she understood herself. Together they ruled Umbra as equals, cherishing the time they had.

Eventually they decided it was time for them to continue their family line; soon after, they were blessed with two eggs, each with the promise of a child. But as Kiera tended her nest, she began to fall ill, and no doctors or healers could ascertain the problem. Days before her children hatched, Kiera perished.

The kingdom mourned for their queen. They prayed that the Shadowbinder would carry her gently to her domain. And the Shadowbinder did...but Kiera refused to go with her. She fought tooth and claw to remain, however intangible, and watch her children grow. The goddess could not agree to this, for restless spirits went against the order of things; but, for the queen of such a devoted kingdom, she offered a compromise.

Now Kiera roams the tangled wood, offering guidance to the living and dead alike on behalf of her deity. Travellers, she leads to safety; spirits, she leads to eternity. All the while she watches her children as they become leaders like their parents before them.

She watches, in turn, as they fall.

Then, embracing them at last, she guides them home.
