THE RED QUEEN

she has always been scared.

she first awoke in a nest of brambles that kept her pinned under thorns that tore at soft scales; sometimes, she could see her heart beating. she snapped halfheartedly when fingers extended through the tangled branches, prodding. the branches became more a cocoon than an enemy. by the time she was large enough to break free, her muscles had atrophied enough that her wings hung limp by her sides. she feared she would be eaten alive. the forest was ruthless; she would learn to be ruthless as well.

by the time the age for her to take her own charge had come and left, she has scared she was broken. perhaps her mind had atrophied like her wings. in a desperate mad attempt to fix herself, she knocked a tiny fae from his roost. she rolled the thought of snapping his neck over her tongue, but did not act upon any urges. she impulsively adopted him as her own charge, making sure he did not sleep. he belonged to her.

thus she began to want.

a child of the tangled wood, it was easy to bend things her way. help! he is hurt, we are lost, help! and so her group of unwanted stragglers grew. they believed she could see something in them that others could not. she was fearful of things that they were not fearful of, so she used them, and they could not see otherwise.

to others, there was always something charismatic about her. by the time the growing clan settled, she was self-declared and obviously the leader they were desperate for; someone to give structure. though her structure was dangerous and ill-fated, they had never been exposed to anything else and accepted it.

she spends her time above the clan's grounds on a ledge hidden by the sun, a watchful eye over her subjects. none dare to question her rule or suggest changes. even the fae, who has grown to know her unpredictable nature and work around it, has been silenced. her fear of being trapped like her first experiences with the world has led her to become as mad as the tangled wood.

sometimes she is more a rabid dog than a queen.
