The only reason Mikasa became leader of the clan in total chaos after a horrible dictatorship are the technicalities. She didn't want to do it, but everyone trusted her, and no-one else was suitable for the position: former leader dead, one before her had disappeared and last child known to be related to the leader in any way had disowned her heritage. A charming mess, truly. Skydancer didn't even know how to lead: sure, she had been the head warrior so long no-one, besides maybe few older dragons, knew time she had not been in that position. Yeah, she had helped with decisions when Serenity's fragile mental health had made doing such things difficult, and yes, she did know all the major alliances and grudges of the surrounding area, but still. She was not ready for such responsibility and power. Especially when her major skills were in the art of combat rather than boring politics and talking stuff.

But considering she didn't really have a choice, and that clan desperately needed something to get it out of the chaos it had been in several years now due to chaotic and power-hungry leaders, she started her long and painful process in this art of politics. Learning the ropes was dangerous business. More than once she accidentally offended few leaders of more 'higher class'-clans, and once she accidentally smacked someone to the face with a book(for her credit, the pearlcatcher deserved it for yelling at Chariot), but she did learn. Sadly, forging alliances turned out to be difficult balancing act that more often backfired than succeeded.

When not doing her political business with other clans, Mikasa is most commonly found training or battling off some harmful creatures that occasionally come around clan's lands. Almost as often you can find her chatting it up with Pamela, trying to encourage her to be something else than 'smiling time bomb of emotion' all the time, with varying results. Sometimes you can even find her visiting Chariot and trying to reason with him about Cheshire(she is Pamela's great-granddaughter after all and Mikasa really doesn't want to see her mate mope over that embodiment of dread and horror anymore).
So, despite her not getting chance to wield her ax as often as she used to, she's satisfied with current situation... for now. She has past things she needs to work with, but she doesn't want to.

Sadly, having less busy schedule overall leads to some moments without anything to do, and those are the worst. Those are the times the memories try to surface. The memories of her mother trying to force her to accept her ideals, the memories of being called 'fodder', and memories of her escaping while her siblings were not lucky enough to follow. She hated thinking them, yet they always came back. She never told anyone. it's not for them to worry, anyway. And things were better now, she was a leader(unwillingly, but it still counted), she had a loving wife, and she had one of best second-in command's one could ask for(if he just would stop being so paranoid). Not to forget, the clan needed her to be strong, and clan should always come first. No questions about that. it deserved it after everything that had happened.
