"Who will you be when you don't have to be anyone?"
⚔ STORY
Some families take their god’s purpose too seriously. Ju Pai has always thought this but he hasn’t always had the words to explain it. In the Starfall Isles, there are some clans that pursue the academic heights they imagine will make the Arcanist take note of them, perhaps he’ll bestow upon them a favour or a gold star or something. They pursue knowledge, study the movements of the stars, the rotation of Sornieth, attempt to unravel the mysteries of the universe. Just as Arcanist intended. But they do so with the sort of zeal that would do Stormcatcher proud. The sort of zeal that burns hot and dies fast. The sort of zeal that blinds. No one ever noticed Ju Pai, too absorbed with their own interests, but that’s how he preferred it. When he was noticed… That was worse. It was always with those horrible questions: When are you bringing a mate to dinner? When will you choose your area of study? Which branch of scientific inquiry will you devote your life to? When will you be useful? When will you make us proud? When will you be a “valuable member of society”? Whatever that means. Living under the weight of those expectations almost crushed him, because Ju Pai is just a small dragon, only small, and he’s quiet and gentle and oh so fragile. But his family never saw that, never saw him past the stars in their eyes and the ancient parchments under their noses. He’s always been invisible. Always been unremarkable. “They wouldn’t notice if I was simply gone one morning,” he said to himself, once. And that… Well, now, wasn’t that an idea. So one morning he was simply gone. Off to find somewhere quiet and gentle and small just for him, something sized right and easier to carry. And no one noticed. Few even noticed him while he was travelling – searching (feeling like a guardian some days, big and strong and capable) – he wasn’t worth bothering. Not rich or powerful or clever or important. Just a little fae, no one. And that’s just how he liked it. The world is big and scary and does everything it can to try and convince you that the only way to survive it is by being harder, colder, more self-serving than a warm and squishy-hearted little dragon might like. But it’s wrong. There are luminous mushrooms amongst even the darkest of woods, there are glittering many-hued reefs even in the blackest waters, and there are shimmering gems tucked in even the deepest caverns. And there are others like him. He knows because he found them. Or they found him. Whichever. Niende brought him to the Reliquary, having found him lost and wandering. Niende is good at finding lost things, good at knowing their value, but they’re not known for rehoming them. But now Ju Pai is here, and he is seen for the first time, valued for being himself. He’s no longer asked when he will become useful. He no longer feels pressured to devote his life to some cause or pursuit. He is simply himself. Being himself is enough. And if he can help even one other dragon learn that it’s okay to be simply them, then that’s enough for him. ⚔ OTHER
