Soul Watch

"The Wall Between Worlds is Thinner than you Might Think"

The task of a Soulwatch is a difficult one. Few are called to it, even less survive it's rigours, and those who do are never the same again.

Born of shadow and plague, Aramoana understands the spread of chaos and violence, the panic of a lost soul newly returning to the world. She knows that panic can spread like a virus through the dragons who remain, twisting and torturing their minds until only shells remain. It's a gruesome process.

Aramoana came to Ista following the riling of her blood. The arcane twist of wrongness pulled her from the Wyrmwound itself, and in Ista's deep caverns she found the enraged Nameless Ghoul, and the monstrous Kaarnicu. Between them, they are the most powerful enemies she's ever faced, and she feels more than a little overwhelmed.

She's found a curious set of allies in this strange little clan, though. Vela shifts between realities, here one minute gone the next, and seems to know her own mind before she does. Vela helps when she can, and the eccentric imperial is certainly a powerful ally, but it's gentle Edylia who helps her the most.

Edylia is from the realm Beyond, a soul stuck in the rocks of one reality when it should be floating in the next. She hunts the Nameless one and the monster, chasing them through the caves and stones and through the relentless sea swells, protecting her clan. Really, Aramoana should move her on, help her let go and be free, but something always makes her pause.

Her silent ally - for if she can speak Aramoana's never heard it - has power in her soul. Something old and new and strong and fragile, and it's so confusing and shatteringly beautiful that Aramoana can't bring herself to destroy it, even if it would give her new friend a form of peace. Like calls to like, she supposes; perhaps, if Edylia had lived, she would have been a Soulwatch, too.

Perhaps, someday, she'll have the courage to complete her oath. When they've won, perhaps, and it won't feel so much like a betrayal. Until then, they will hunt together, in this strange, welcoming little clan. They will run and fight and rage side by side, beacons of hope and protection against the warping coils of shadow and malevolence these monsters bring; vengeance given draconic form.
