Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Swamp

______ Arguably the most important thing anyone needs to know about Jarl is how he so badly needed to leave.

______ This need to escape consumed him so from his first days in the swamp. It is not the fault of his parents, of course-- no part of his voracious need to leave should be blamed on anyone. The dragon simply saw his parents’ quest to serve and protect as some sort of death sentence. Why should he (and, for that matter, all of the other dragons trapped here) be forced to serve a cause they did not believe in?

______ Of course, as is the case with many young dragons, Jarl had a lot of trouble seeing past his own woes. He saw torment and misery where only happiness and curiosity lay, and he desperately sought a solution. When word of Baldwin and the mysterious Bogsneak arrived, the guardian saw his chance and began his secret project: creating the perfect guardian, and freeing this clan from its endless mission.

______ As any dragon could have predicted, this wild experiment was met with disastrous results. Instead of duplicating Baldwin’s fortunate mistake, Jarl instead ended up raising two well-preserved dragon corpses from the swamp-- long-lost plague dragons who must now find their place in the clan, as their nightmarish looks and curse of immortality keep them from leaving.

______ It is important to note that, while Jarl made a great number of mistakes (including completely misunderstanding the actual scientific marvel Baldwin had accomplished), no amount of blundering and chance could have raised two dragons from the dead. This was obvious to all of those within Clan Golden Guardian at the time, and caused great distress. How had Jarl done such a thing? Would these dragons live for more than a few days? Could this extreme use of magic also cause Jarl to die?

______ In the past, the biggest mysteries within the swamp were surrounding its beginnings, but it would seem that a new set of questions were bubbling to the surface, and suspicions of a deep and powerful magic swirled through the members of the clan.

______ Most surprising of all, Jarl’s need for more waned that day, and never returned. He seems to be a new dragon now, one bonded forever to his mistaken creations. Jarl now works as a scientist and alchemist for Clan Golden Guardian; his scientific journals fill his mother’s library faster than she can keep up with. While his ambition was once to become a noble warrior and rise to fight for Gladekeeper, his new mission is clear: fix his mistakes. Bring real life to Thanatos and Libitina, whatever the costs.
