Biography

- Dagny - New Beginnings. -
~

The cold snow nipped at the bottoms of my tender feet as I tentatively made my way to the middle of the group, my heart racing, and confusion washing over me as I struggled to keep up with the rest and what was going on. All of the bigger dragons kept telling us how lucky we were. What an honor it was. That we should feel honored to serve a higher cause. I looked around, uncertain as ancient, icy pillars loomed far overhead. Even more so afraid because I didn’t feel the same honor that some of the others had been bestowed with. In fact, how I felt was far from honorable.

I wondered where my siblings were. I wondered what they were doing, right now. If they were standing somewhere afraid like I was, or if they had that unshakable resolve that left so many emboldened and full of energy as they awaited the fateful day. I wondered if my parents were well. I hoped they were. It wasn’t their fault I was here.

The snow came down in blankets, leaving everyone dusted in large, cumbersome flakes that stuck fast if you stayed still for too long, and I found myself unnerved by the sound of it. Kind of a constant, hushed rustle in your ear. Or like coals softly crackling in a warm fire. I took a quick breath and held it, trying to calm my nerves. I’d heard nothing good about the Icewarden. He had weird, furry feet and no sense of humor. What if I messed up? What if I disappointed him? What would he do to me? He was a God, after all. I quivered pitifully as I remembered the stories… the Fortress of Ends. Thousands of horrified faces, forever encased in icy prisons. What if that was true? What if they weren't just stories? What if I ended up like that…

My imagination ran wild, my eyes locked on some not-so-far-away terror, unaware that I was already in the very place that had me spooked when a young spiral about my age bumped into me. I stumbled out of the way with a yelp. “Hey watch out!” she squeaked, staring at me with big, luminous green eyes, and I started to shuffle out of the way before a tiny claw reached out and touched my shoulder. “Are you okay?

She assessed me with a soft, well-meaning expression, and there was something in her gaze that I desperately needed: Empathy. “No.” I said after a little while, and started to tune up. “I want my Momma.” And that was all it took. Hello hysteria. “Don’t cry, oh no!” She peeped, and I was suddenly coiled up with a tiny, comforting, Eldritch noodle. “I'll tell you, I'll tell you what." She began, and then leaned in cautiously so only I would hear, "I can make this go away.” Stunned, and still crying a little, I looked up at her. “H-How?” I croaked, lost in a blur of motion as the other youngsters cast about. “Do you want this?” She asked eagerly, and I shook my head furiously. I could think of a thousand more pleasant things I’d rather do than serve the Icewarden. “No.” I whimpered back, 100% certain, and her eyes gleamed a bit. “I know someone who can help… oh, and my name’s Mallori by the way. The nice Coatl lady can help, my Mom and her are good friends. She says she's done this before.” She assured as she began urgently ushering me off to the side. We stumbled a little ways in silence before she piped back up. "She's my escort. That's how I made it all the way here! She offered it to me but..." she sighed. "I want this. This is who I am now."

Nice coatl lady? Nice sounded good enough to me. I didn't quite know what to say to my new friend so I started to tell her my name, but was struck silent... what was my name? “I-I… don’t, have a name… I don’t think…” my voice cracked uncertainly as I turned it over in my head, distraught. I didn't remember actually ever getting a real name. “That's okay! You can pick a whole new name once we find Abriia, she'll make this aaall go away.” She giggled, and suddenly I became increasingly more aware that I’d, perhaps unwittingly, surrendered to a brand new kind of unknown…
