B I O G R A P H Y

____ Otachi came from the deep. The first month of her life she remembers only the dark depths of the water below the Starfall Isles, living beyond where the light could touch. She does not know what moved her to seek the surface, but one day she did, and as soon as she broke the surface she felt the pull of her Charge, far to the south. Her first night in the Starwood Strand she dreamt of forest and tundra and snow and knew her Charge was a place. Otachi could picture it - with every day that she drew nearer to the Southern Icefield it became clearer. She saw a lair at the base of a mountain, felt the presence of the dragons who lived there.

____ Her journey south went (figuratively) south somewhere in the Frigid Floes. Otachi had felt someone following her for hours before she decided to simply confront whoever or whatever it was. And by confront she meant sneak up on from behind. She doubled back over the floes and quickly spotted another dragon, another guardian, whose deep red coloring did not lend itself at all to camouflage in the land of ice. Every dragon she had passed up until this point had given her a feeling of danger, bad, keep you from your Charge, but from this young guardian she felt only calm. And she was young, Otachi could tell, barely hatched and clearly already out on her Search. Otachi overpowered her easily, but carefully, something inside her keeping her from harming the hatchling. She simply sat on the girl, and asked her for a name.

____ The girl didn't have one. She also didn't like being sat on, and had none of the reluctance for violence Otachi was currently feeling. After a minute of struggle, it was clear she was strong, just not as strong as Otachi, whose legs were powerful from a childhood in the water. They had reached a stalemate - Otachi refusing to move, the girl refusing to answer questions - when a strong gust of icy air swept through, and Otachi could taste something on the wind, something new but at the same time familiar, and all at once she knew. Her Charge was close. The girl, who had managed to unpin herself, had a look on her face that Otachi could feel was the same as her own. Whatever this girl was searching for, she was close too. Otachi took off into the air, no need to conserve her strength when her goal was so near.

____ There was a screech from below, and then Otachi could see the girl spring into the air, and she could fly. They were a match for speed, and at the moment Otachi saw her Charge for the first time, the girl was right there next to her. She was still there when Otachi's feet touched the ground that had been calling to her from miles away. She was still there when a pair of spirals who had been gossiping in the sun shot up and yelled an alarm, and when it was answered by a large, dully colored tundra dragon and a tiny fae with disconcerting eyespots on her wings. Otachi sank to the ground in front of the fae, who was clearly the one in charge here, and felt the girl do the same beside her.

____ Otachi told her story first, and then the girl told hers, and halfway through it Otachi realized what she should have already. They were there for the same purpose. This guardian had felt a pull from this land the same way Otachi had. They had the same Charge. For some reason, this didn't seem to shock the fae, who was listening with an expressionless face, but then Otachi had never been good at reading faes. She worried that there would have to be a fight, and she was not ready to take the girl hatchling's life nor lose her own. In the end though, the fae simply nodded at them both, introduced herself as Farsiris, the Founder and Queen of the clan, and informed them that sharing would do them both good.

____ As it turned out, Farsiris knew what she was talking about. Otachi did learn to share her Charge, and the girl, who was given the name Mikasa, was strong and capable and a worthy dragon to help defend their new home. When the clan grew, Otachi worried she would be forced to choose between them and the land she was Charged to protect, but the night they were to move her dream changed, and she saw a clearing, a cave, a pocket of color in the otherwise bleak expanse of the mountains, and knew she was meant to follow them wherever they were to go. Mikasa met her gaze steadily the next morning, and the look in her red eyes told Otachi that she too had felt her Charge shift, a confirmation of what Otachi had already known. They were the protectors of this clan, always, unflinchingly. Together.
