blankblank Before Varuna was even born, his mother was plagued with bizarre dreams. In them, she would see a skydancer who looked much like her mate, yet his feathers shone with a starry brilliance and he seemed larger—if lither—than her mate. He never spoke, but he also tried to show Reqiuem something, to direct her through the woods where her dreams always took place. But always she woke before she could take the first step, having wasted too much time taking in the appearances of this dragon. She couldn’t help it; she was transfixed by his appearance.

Then Varuna and his sister, Aetheria, were born. Both had been born skydancers like their father, Lux, and even shared his light blue belly where their mothers was a deep, navy blue. Right away, Varuna was the more reserved of the two. His parents thought him simple at first, for he looked at the world around him with a dream-like gaze and always seemed lost in his own imagination. This didn’t change as he grew. In fact, he seemed to only become more distant from the world. He was livelier at night and quickly adapted a nocturnal schedule. When he and his sister grew the usual age where dragons left their home flights, Aetheria elected to stay where Varuna seemed prepared to leave.

The farewell was unceremonious and indeed lasted only long enough for him to say his goodbyes before he was gone, flying into the chilly sky over the snowy crags his home clan had their lair. His flight, funnily enough, did not last too long. His path was linear, as if he knew exactly where he was going, and when he came across a lair that made its home in the crag of an icy fjord that overlooked the southern sea of the Icefields, he flew low and landed.

He found himself on a bridge that connected two sides of the fjord together. It was night and the walkways were empty, but Varuna welcomed himself inside. The ice-covered wooden door that served as a simple way to keep out the chill opened easily for him, allowing entry inside. The tunnel proved empty, but he followed an instinctual path that had him winding down and deeper into the icy lair.

Soon enough, he found what he was looking for. A row of dens lay before him, doors sometimes leading to more private rooms while cots hung from the ceiling, picks struck into the wall to keep them there. A variety of dragons lay before him, although a few beds were notably empty. The nightly guard, one would presume, but they’d been carefully avoided by Varuna.

It was here that Varuna took a seat, right at the entrance to the dens, with his forepaws tucked beneath him. He eyed the sleeping dragons for a minute or two before tucking his head against his side and fell asleep. Then he dreamed.

He dreamed of all the dragons around them and dreamed of their dreams, but he sifted through them like paper, slipping aside them all until he found the one he was looking for. Finding Aelius’ dreams, he slipped into them and presented himself to the darkness.

The mighty Imperial and leader of the ice clan that Varuna had snuck into was haunted by nightmares that had been pestering Varuna for days. He felt drawn to them constantly, and now there he was. He forced himself upon the nightmare, banishing them away minute after minute, hour after hour. At last it leveled out, a normal dream taking place as decided by Varuna.

He woke easily after that, but did not move from his spot. When dawn broke, the light not even touching the insides of the ice lair, the dragons around him finally began to stir. He was noticed quickly, but didn’t seem bothered by their hostility.

At last, Aelius came and found him. He looked surprised to see Varuna, recognition flooding his features at this strange dragon who had appeared in his dreams.

“He is with me,” Aelius told his clanmates. Those who moved to argue were quickly shut down. With one wing, Aelius scooped Varuna into a sitting position and directed him down one of the tunnels. “He is with me,” he reminded his clanmates, “and we have much to talk about.”

And, only three days after leaving his birth clan, Varuna had successfully found a new one.
