Lirael Rakamashi
Lirael, the mutated daughter of Nimmi the alchemist and Jekusea the wizard, was an oddity in the clan from the very beginning. An accident, many called her. Her sister Njala was the only dragon who truly accepted for who she was. As a result, Lirael receded from the rest of the clan at an early age. Though there were no swaps or bogs this high in the mountains, Lirael carved out a separate cave for herself, away from the rest of the clan, as soon as she was old enough to leave Nimmi's side. Windspar, the clan's male Wildclaw, visited her often, to the dismay of his mate, Greywind, and to Lirael's growing affection. Windspar and Lirael bore three eggs, and Lirael tended them with love and gentleness. When her son and daughters hatched, Lirael was in love. They were her perfect children, all Bogsneaks like her, with an innocent curiosity and delight in life and captivated her from the start. Each had their own personality, their own likes and dislikes. Lirael was determined that nothing would harm them. Ever. The, one fateful night, Lirael went hunting for her hatchlings. She left them in Windspar's care, trusting him to tend their hatchlings. When she returned, the cave was empty, except for Windspar, who explained that he had brought them to the Icewarden. "They were taking up too much space," he said. "But now it's just you and me again, love," Lirael was furious. Her precious hatchlings, gone. In a fury, she launched herself at Windspar, who fled in shock. Lirael then hurried out into the night to search for her babies. She could not find them. They were gone, taken to other lands that she could not reach. Lirael was heartbroken. As she wept on a mountainside, a young Wildclaw approached her, and asked why she was crying. Lirael, remembering Windspar's betrayal, lashed out at him. He hurried away, and Lirael returned to her lonely, empty cave. But the Wildclaw, whose name was Farouk, He-who-distinguishes-between-right-and-wrong, followed her. After several days, he revealed himself to her. Lirael's anger, which had slowly eased into sorrow, was no longer against him, and she grudgingly allowed to stay in a cave adjacent to her home. Lirael is slowly letting Farouk into her heart, making up for the whole Windspar tore apart. They have raised many hatchlings together, and though none of them can ever make up for her firstborn, Lirael is healing. Slowly but surely, her mother's heart is mending itself. Most of her children, however, were not fathered by her beloved Farouk. Soon after their second nest, Farouk began hearing a strange voice, one which called his ceaselessly, and he could not ignore its call any more than he could ignore his urge to breathe. With great reluctance, Lirael let him follow his call. She watched him fly away into the low clouds, and knew he would never return. She does not know where he is now. But his time with her, however short, was enough to begin mending her heart. She has nested with other males, and raised their hatchlings with great joy and love. But none hold her heart like Farouk Greenfire, He-Who-Distinguishes-Between-Right-And-Wrong, her forever mate. |
