1 | 2 | 3 | 4 Ayako was born to wanderers and so learned to love the world. She learned to love the wet earth, the blistering sands, the cool streams, and the harrowing mountains. She traveled with them for long years, always learning, always listening. She knew much, knew how to forge and to weave, claws always gentle and patient. She learned this from those she met, and once she had left her parents, she remembered. She remembered how it felt to heat metal till it was soft, how to smith a cauldron into being, and so she found a mentor in a blacksmith who taught her for a year before she had learned enough, without mastery. She found a silversmith, a goldsmith, a jeweler, every profession which took fire, which took the earth itself and made it anew, she loved and learned from, never quite mastering each. She was quiet, patient, gentle -- yes, her diligence earned her the name of "coldsmith" but she did not mind. She was kind to those who asked, who dared to become her friends. She held no loyalty, not enough to stay, and so was gone -- but she never forgot. She understands the earth, the metal, the light, the fire -- she understands and this is what calms her when her fears rise up her spine, threatening to choke her. She is a Designer, one who has an eye for beauty and for function alike, her pieces much sought after. Perhaps later in life she will learn to love other, living creations of the earth -- such as hatchlings, but for now, she is smitten by the work.
