Biography

Rubyshimmer is a sentry stationed in the Western City of the Midnight Seclusion with her sister, Dawnhawk. Despite being a Gaoler, Rubyshimmer doesn't take her job as seriously as she should. She gets by just doing the bare minimum and ticks others off with her snarky comments and pranks. Other Gaolers that are familiar with her are most likely ashamed to even be associated with her.

When she and her sister first came to the Midnight Seclusion, they had a hard time making friends. They arrived soon after the Gaolers came out of isolation. Everybody looked at the sisters with awe, treating them like strong warriors, and setting high expectations for them. This put a pressure on them to do something great in society's standards even though neither of them had very many skills or hobbies to speak of. The two finally decided guard duty was a suitable position for them, not having anything better to do with their lives. Unfortunately, this job turned out to be mundane, and they aren't paid very well.

Rubyshimmer is capable of doing her job when she sets her mind to it. But alas, she's probably the most irresponsible out of her friends. She tries to deflect criticisms with sarcasm and blaming others for expecting too much of her, but she knows deep down that she's kind of a mess. Even though guard duty hasn't given her the glory she thought it would, she sees no point in doing anything else with her life. She hasn't had the chance to find a hobby that would actually make her happy. The attitudes that some "conservative" Gaolers have towards hobbies and sentimentality have certainly harmed her view on the topic as well. She's not supposed to do things that make her happy because the safety of Sornieth from the Shade isn't built on feelings. At the same time, there is a discussion to be had about whether or not her unhappiness affects how well she does her job. (She and her sister's best friend is probably a bad influence, too.)

Unfortunately, Rubyshimmer's irresponsibility with guard duty can and will cause trouble.

Why did you decide to become a guard in the first place?

Rubyshimmer thinks about this for a moment before giving her answer. She looked expressionless, not disinterested, but more indifferent to the subject.
"My sister and I weren't sure what we wanted to do when we arrived at the Midnight Seclusion," she admitted. "We weren't really good at anything. But, we figured that being Gaolers, we might as well pick up guard duty. It's supposed to be our purpose for existing, after all. Gaolers, created by the Icewarden, all those icy jails and trapping Shade creatures. We're supposed to be legendary, and everybody on the street looks at us like we're renowned warriors! Of course, their expectations are way too high in our case."

The warm-colored dragon sighs, tilting her head. "It's not that we're bad at our job, it's just too boring to pay attention for hours on end. And don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone to get hurt, but either nothing happens whenever we're working or criminals are too good at hiding. Or, to quote some of our supervisors, we're 'not trying hard enough'."

She groans in annoyance at that. "Geez, I wish they'd lay off for once. Like, they have a bunch of other guards and mercenaries, some of which they can't even afford to pay well! It's stupid, if you ask me. Though, I'm going off on tangents. Maybe if some of us are paid better, we might actually try harder. But I'm pretty sure this clan is in debt because of the stupid war with the Serthis and all that... no wonder, hm?"
