Nexus's first few months at the refuge were uneventful, as King and Pavla raised him like one of their own, and he got along well with most of the other hatchlings. One day, however Nexus decided he wanted to see what lay beyond the refuge. He headed even deeper into the wasteland, until he came across the Wyrmwound. Stepping closer to get a better look, Nexus gave a surprised yelp as the rock crumbled beneath him, sending him falling towards the glowing green ooze.
As the hatchling entered the goo, he screamed. It was the worst pain he had experienced in his entire(admittedly short) life. He now regretted going exploring. Why did he have to sneak out? Why couldn't he have just stayed in the nursery with the other hatchlings? Now he was drowning in a pit of radioactive gunk, and no one knew where he was. Suddenly, Nexus felt a pair of talons wrap around him, before pulling him out of the wyrmwound, to safety. It was Sucralose, the dragon in charge of the refuge's hatchlings. "Thank the eleven, you're ok!" The imperial said. "Wait a minute, did you always have spines?"
Later, Nexus realized how lucky he was, after his parents gave him a long lecture on the dangers of the wasteland. He could have died, or been mutated into a horrible abomination. Other than the bony spines jutting out of his back, and the strange glowing markings across his scales, Nexus was physically unharmed by the experience. Afterwards however, he became driven to ensure the other hatchlings were safe. So, when it became time for him to embark on The Search, the choice was obvious. He took the hatchlings of The Rotrock Refuge as his charges. He is now close friends with his partner and rescuer, Sucralose.
The gifts given to him by the hatchlings he protects are some of his most prized possessions, the glittery bow on his head being the most prominent example.
