CLOUD ; The exalted warrior

═══════════════════════════════════════════

When I was lost, the original leaders of this clan took me in. I was much older than the couple, but couldn't turn them down in my state. I had let my prior clan down and failed the rigorous training they had established for me. The leaders, Ichiro and Vrinde, were known for having beautiful children despite their odd range of colours. Ichiro and Vrinde were devout pacifists, unlike my old clan leaders. They refused to fight, even when threatened, which lead to the clan becoming somewhat nomadic with members often leaving after staying for a short period.

However, I stayed - I felt indebted to them, and someday they'd need a protector. I at least had basic combat knowledge. One day, they bore an incredibly rare child - all three of her colours were Grey - the first of her kind. This child brought much attention from other clans, and soon others came to take the child for her value. For the first time in their lives, Ichiro and Vrinde fought - they fought to keep their daughter. I fought along side them, and did my best. However, it wasn't enough. The old leaders were slain by the attackers, but I managed to run away with the child in arm. I had failed again. I knew I couldn't protect the child, so I sent her to live with another trusted clan.

Zeta, they named her. I was left with the other members of the clan, many of whom left after the battle. A select few stayed with me, but everyone was much younger than I and thus looked to me for guidance and leadership. I felt as though I was a failure and didn't deserve their respect, so for a long while we hid deep in the outskirts of The Shifting Expanse. The others were patient with me, but I could feel them growing restless. I was overwhelmed by the idea of being a leader - I had failed to protect the two who cared for me, then how could I protect an entire clan of my own?

Dany, a dainty pearlcatcher who had been in the clan almost as long as I had, was my greatest confidante. She tried desperately to convince me the battle wasn't my fault and that I had still succeeded, as I had managed to rescue the child. I couldn't bring myself to see her point of view. Despite us being vastly outnumbered in the battle, my original clan had raised its children with a strong moral of strength - if you were unable to overtake any obstacle you were deemed a failure and cast off by the leaders. The dragons of this clan obviously did not feel the same way, as they had been cultured to Ichiro and Vrinde's tactics of avoidance rather than confrontation.

I kept us hidden for years, but eventually, the battle found us. A smaller clan was seeking shelter in the area, but due to the lack of resources they decided to take our cave by force. Reluctantly, I again took up my sword. However, this time, we had the advantage. I went into battle with a merciless mentality, and a few other members of our clan followed me. We fought our way through the small group of dragons, and they began to beg for mercy. They explained that they only wished for a place to seek refuge from the storms, and vehemently apologized for trying to take our land. They pleaded that we simply let them go. The rest of the clan turned to me - they were willing to follow my opinion on how to proceed.

My mind raced back to the test I had failed with my old clan. It was a real attack my clan had waged on another's territory, and I was faced with a child from the other clan - she was barely out of the egg, holding a small dagger in a shaking claw. I turned to my leader, and he looked down on me and boomed,

"Leave no survivors."

I refused; I couldn't do it. I let the child go. My leader was furious and exiled me the next day.

I looked back at the fearful faces of the attacking clan and remembered how Ichiro and Vrinde had always accepted new and frightened members who were simply trying to survive against clans like my old one. Then, looking toward my current clan members I could see the trust they placed in me, despite having lost their old leaders due to my incompetence. I raised my sword. The other dragons lunged forward in anticipation, ready to strike on my command. The other clan took a step back, cowering in fear and attempting to shield the young members of their family.

I brought the sword down swiftly and lodged it into the ground. The dragons behind me stood still, staring in confusion as I turned to them.

"We've hidden long enough. I've made many mistakes. I didn't think I was good enough to be your leader, but there was no one else. So I chose to hide, forcing you all into the dark with me. Why don't we honour our fallen leaders, and do what they would've wanted? Let us take these travelers with us, protect their children as our own, and move into the Light."
