Bestiary Keeper

A fork of lightning split the night sky, lighting up the dripping foliage. Uncontrollable sobbing shook the trees, originating from a Snapper whose tears mixed with the drenching rain. A tiny Skydancer clung to her back, crooning with anxiety. Her mate, a male Skydancer, urgently pulled along the Snapper, whispering about the dangers snapping at their heels.
They soon reached a hollow tree trunk. The inside was moldy and water soaked it, making the interior humid and suffocating. The Snapper, tears still streaming down her face, picked up the baby Skydancer by the scruff of her neck, setting her gently in the sweet grass blanketing the inside of the trunk.
Confused, the newborn cried out a mournful screech. The Snapper turned away, unable to bear witness to her daughter. The Skydancer, however, wasted no time. He piled foliage up in front of the trunk, sticking it together with mud. Not a shred of light from the increasing lightning storm could leak into the hollowed out area.
"Come on, Grimmia, I can hear it coming...!"
A scream split the air. A bestial roar and the slamming of huge teeth shook the trees. Hurried beating of wings filled the little Skydancer's ears. But she was rigid with fear, absolutely silent.
As the wingbeats faded into the night, a creature huffed angrily. It blew air out from its maw, flapping its gums away from its teeth. As it did so, it caught a strange scent...
It snuffled, growing dangerously close to the Skydancer's hiding place. It paused, then pushed its snout through the wall that the male Skydancer had hurriedly thrown together.
A huge snout dipped into her vision. A vine loosely circled it and jagged teeth poked through. Huge, thorny antlers spiked atop its head. Fluorescent green mushrooms studded its body, pulsating with an eerie glow. In time, the Skydancer would come to know this creature as a Thornthick Thief. But, at the moment, she only knew it as scary.
The bear seemed confused to have stumbled upon such a creature. She had been expecting something more fierce, not a tiny hatchling. In fact, she was so unprepared for this, that she just stood there, dumbfounded. For some reason, she didn't feel compelled to eat this creature... she felt obligated to protect it.
So, she did. Of course, there was always a language barrier between the two. Neither knew how to express what they were feeling to the other, except through subtle facial expressions or motions. But, they made do. The Thornthick Thief loved the Skydancer that she had come to call her cub. And the Skydancer loved the bear that she had come to call her mother.
Yet, the Thornthick Thief always felt uncomfortable. She was hiding something from her cub, something that was unspeakably horrible. As time wore on, however, she knew that one day, she would have to show her child her parents' terrible crimes.

So, on a day bright with sunshine, she growled at her gruffly, motioning to her back. Without a second thought, the Skydancer climbed on. The bear groaned as she took a plodding step forward; soon, it would be her child carrying her.
Familiar trees worn down by her claws passed in her peripheral vision as she made her way through the forest, heading to the center. Her cub tightened her grip on her back as she realized that they were heading into the heart of the forest, a place that she had never been permitted to go.
The bear winced as she rounded a corner, noting the first signs of the horribleness that the Skydancer's parents had done. Blackened branches instead of supple brown ones lashed at her face and charcoal stained the pads of her paws. Green shoots poked up from among the dead.
As she continued, she could hear her cub gasp in astonishment. She had grown up in the forest and seeing it like this... it must have just killed her. The Thornthick Thief gave a soft, sad huff. But they were still not at the worst of it.
She rounded a corner, and there it was: a twisted tree with black snaking up from the roots. The upper half of the tree was green, and the other half was an evil black. Birds nested in the green leaves, oblivious to the skeletons of their brethren littering the ground.
The shock of the Skydancer was evident. She had seen death; with her living in the wild, it was inevitable. But this... this was on a much, much larger scale. The death of so many innocent creatures shocked her into rigidness. She had never seen destruction like this. She had never seen magic in the claws of those who wished to use it for themselves.
A rage built up in her. She had to punish the creatures that did this. She roared at the destruction, showing her rage, her fury at the cruelty. The Thornthick Thief sighed gruffly, knowing what the Skydancer wanted.
The next few days, they prepared for the Skydancer's quest. Over the time the bear had been raising the orphaned Skydancer, she had grown old and was not able to make such a long and taxing journey. So, instead, she gave her a detailed sketch of a male Skydancer that she had found in his abandoned lair and a sack with provisions for the trip.
She set out, learning new things and coming across creatures she had never seen before. She learned Draconic from the maws of dragons like herself. She was given the name Eleion, for the nymphs of the marshes, Eleionomae.
She continued to track down her targets, using the image that the Thornthick Thief had given her. Her travels led her to the Shadow domain, after receiving a tip from a hefty Snapper. After venturing deep within the Driftwood Drag, she settled in a log for the night.
She awoke, pricking her ears as she heard a not-so-stealthy dragon crash through the underbrush. She crept out from the log, aware that she was absolutely invisible against the dark greens and blacks. She watched as a Tundra with green eyes made her way through the underbrush. Her fur kept getting caught on branches. Eleion barely concealed a snort. "Need help?" She called out, voice laced with amusement.
The figure jumped a little, her head whipping around, trying to locate the source of the sound. "Uh... yes please." The dragon said sheepishly, revealing a ragged and worn tone.
Eleion soon helped release the dragon from the brambles and had a fire going. Even though it wasn't cold out, the flickering light was comforting to her. She and the other dragon began talking. First, the Tundra told her story. It was heart-wrenching, the way that her family had been snatched away so cruelly. Eleion offered her sincere condolences for the young dragon.
After being asked to tell her story, Eleion weaved a tale of a power-hungry dragon and his mate that was oblivious to his crimes. The world was against them, and their children were often killed as they ran from their enemies. One day, he destroyed a huge tree, making his mate aware of all that he had done. It had been a monument to life and housed innocent creatures. That day, they were made an enemy of all Nature dragons. It was her duty, her sacred calling, to hunt down these monsters.
After listening, the dragon, Siorus, was silent for a long, long time. Eleion watched her carefully, knowing that, as a dragon that also hailed from the Viridian Labyrinth, she must feel the same way. Finally, Siorus spoke.
"I think that you need to forgive them."
Those eight words were not what Eleion had been expecting. At her confused face, Siorus explained her reasoning: if she were to hunt them down and pay the favor back, she would sink to their level. Where would the death and destruction end?
Siorus continued to speak for a long while. She was heading to the Windswept Plateau in search of peace. If she wanted to, Eleion could come along too. After debating for a few hours, the Skydancer agreed.
The next morning, the two set out. The journey was quick and easy, with barely any problems along the way. The first thing they saw when they reached the edge of the Wind domain was the hulking contraption floating in the sky: the Cloudsong.
They were instantly curious and climbed aboard. It was a cheerful place full of friendly dragons with smiling faces. All clans were welcoming to them... but one stood out to Eleion and Siorus: the Fletching clan. The dragons were kind but had a depth to them that the other clans lacked. Unlike the others' carefree smiles, the grins of these dragons held a mournful sadness underneath that spoke to Eleion. So, she settled on the Cloudsong, a place she would soon learn to call home.

Eleion is a wild gal. She's rarely at home on the Cloudsong, since she's either braving the stronger winds high above the earth for a thrill, or roaming through the bramble and forest of the world below, looking for new familiars, as is her job as the familiar caretaker.
She is among the most brave in the Fletching clan, though she shows her fearlessness in a unique way. Rather than fighting against dragons or Beastclans, she risks life and limb to go out into the most dangerous woods that the Windswept Plateau has to offer, in the hopes that she can bring home a new friend for a lucky dragon.
To tame the larger creatures that she can't easily carry up to the Cloudsong, she has fashioned a farm on the ground. Usually, she'll stick a dozen or so creatures at a time and spend time with them until they are calm enough around dragons to be flown through the air and landed near the Fletching clan.
The most feisty creatures she befriends, however, often fall under her own care. Sometimes, there are dragons that can handle them, and she will gladly let them take one them off her hands.
She and Siorus have remained amazing friends. While the Tundra has become more calm and collected over the time they have spent at the Fletching clan, Eleion has grown in the opposite direction. She has become more fierce and wild, ready to take on any challenge thrown at her.
Her memories of the Thornthick Thief have grown fuzzy. She was still quite young when she left the creature that she had thought of as her mother for as long as she could remember. She has a vague sense of nostalgia when she reflects on the blurred images that are her only token of the past. However, she hates turning her eyes to what has already passed. Rather, she looks forward to the future.
Though she does look back on her past (however rarely) with a sense of sadness, she never regrets her decision of relinquishing her quest of vengeance. The dragon that committed the crime, whom she later found out was her father, might do it again. He could, it was well within his reach. But, eventually, he would come to learn his mistake, whether it be through self-reflection or the punishment of a creature that was sick of being abused by him.
Every time there is a stormy night, she'll be overtaken by an intense fear. No matter what she tries to do, she can neither overcome this terror nor figure out why she is so scared of storms. Nothing daunts her as much as a few bolts of lightning, the downpouring of rain, and the strange sense of evil that comes along with it.

Another Day In the Forest

Eleion's scales melted right into the foliage of the dark forest. Trees crowded out the sun, only allowing a few shards of light to melt through. Her breathing was silent and her footsteps were equally so. Her target didn't even realize she was there.
A huge, hulking bear stood in the clearing, pushing his muzzle through a bunch of berries that Eleion had set out earlier. They would make him slightly sleepy, enough to make him reluctant to swipe at her. As he devoured them, she crept out from her hiding spot.
The bear's eyes flickered lazily to her. Already, the species of Emeraldback Shardspawn was quite tame. The berries made it sluggish and relaxed, so she had no fear as she padded closer.
She approached the bear, testing its familiarity with dragons. It didn't react at all, except for a yawn. She grinned excitedly, looping a rope around her dexterous claws. After convincing it to follow her to her farm, she would have such fun with him! Feeding, playing with the tree trunk she had managed to roll over there, and walking down to the river for long baths and drinks. Already, she could picture it.
With an excited roar, she leaped towards the bear.
