Ephemera | Mate to Vanitas A sudden noise from above startled the Prisoner from her rest. The young imperial sucked in a hopeful breath and squinted her eyes as she looked up towards the ceiling of her cell. Someone was digging into the ground overhead. Chains rattled as the Prisoner lashed her tail back and forth in excitement. As the intruder worked to widen the hole, small pieces of rubble began to rain down, and the Prisoner closed her eyes , rumbled in contentment while she basked in the long-forgotten warmth of the sun. "It's been a while," a deep voice murmured, "My deepest apologies for not coming sooner. I thought you were dead." The Prisoner looked up. Another Imperial gazed back at her, his face impassive. Blood was streaked across his face and neck, and it was splashed across his forelegs as if he had been wading in it. In her blurry vision, his scales seemed to shine as if his body was giving off a light of its own. The Prisoner blinked. No, that wasn't it. The other dragon was strung head to toe with gold jewelry and precious stones. Perhaps he was a noble? He was staring at her more intently now. "Make room," the Imperial murmured, "I'm coming down to break you free." The Prisoner hesitated, and then shuffled to the side. The other dragon made quick work of her shackles and dropped a wrapped bundle by her side. "Eat," he instructed, "and then we can prepare to travel." "Who are you?" The Prisoner spoke between mouthfuls of salted fish and venison. She couldn't recall the last time her captors had fed her anything better than meager scraps and rotted leftovers. It had been so long. She wondered dimly, in the back of her mind, how long she had been imprisoned by the Serthis who kept her. Something flickered in the depths of the other dragon's eyes. "Vanitas," he said carefully. "Can you describe to me your past?" "I don't know," the Prisoner said earnestly. "I can't recall." "I feared so." The other dragon was climbing back out of the hole he had dug, up towards the light. "Come with me. I've gotten rid of the beasts." The Prisoner lifted herself out of the cell slowly. The air stank of smoke. Bodies of Serthis fighters littered the ground around her and she turned to see the charred remnants of their settlement, tents burnt beyond recognition. "It is a lot to take in." Vanitas looked at her sympathetically and dipped his head. "You need time to recover. My clan will be happy to provide you with rest and shelter." "Wait." The Prisoner curled her tail around the foreleg of the other dragon. "You seem to know me. I... I don't know who I am. Could you tell me who I was? Who was I to you?" Vanitas closed his eyes. "Ephemera," he said. |
