Biography

Wayward First Mate Defining Characteristics Empathetic -- Curious -- Trickster Hematite's defining characteristic has always been his curiosity. When he was a hatchling he was constantly asking questions, wanting to know why things were the way they are, or how something worked... It drove those living on The Wayward bonkers, especially when he started turning that curiosity towards more devious means. Pranks became common as well as loud, shouted reprimands as he'd laugh and sneak away, just to reappear later to see what else would bug that particular dragon. As he got older, this side of him became more muted as he became a stronger force within the crew of the ship. He blossomed as a team player who helped anyone who needed it, and it became common for the younger ones to follow him around to learn from him. He still has his moments when he jokes around and plays his usual pranks, but now the safety of the ship and crew takes priority. |

History
Hematite didn't really remember much before he joined The Wayward. Well, it would have been hard to anyway, because he was not even a day old when he first stepped foot on deck. But if he really took the time to stretch his memory, he could remember breaking free from his egg.
It had been frustrating, he remembered. His claws weren't long or strong, and the egg's shell was. He scratched at it and bit at it, but he still remained curled up over himself, uncomfortable and wanting some fresh air. And some food, that would be great too.
It had been pure luck when he did finally break through the shell. One claw snagged on an anomaly and punched right through the shell, giving him his first look of light. It wasn't much, being a campfire inside Baldwin's hut, but it had been new to him. And he wanted to see more. Soon he was furiously tearing apart the hole until it was wider and wider, and then he shoved the whole top of the shell off his head.
That was when he first met Baldwin. The great green dragon was staring down at him with his mouth hung open, excitement glimmering in his eyes.
Hematite wouldn't learn until later that he had been one of the eggs that Baldwin hadn't given away immediately when they came popping out of his cauldron like crazy. Hema thought it was more likely that his egg rolled under the table and had been forgotten.
It took Baldwin about three hours to get tired of being a parent, and bestowed Hema to the first dragon who came and visited him after he decided he wanted no part in this strange offspring. That dragon happened to be Karathyan.
Boy, Hema's ears were still ringing from the scolding Ethrieva gave Karathyan when they alighted on the deck. But, he thought as he finished spreading the neon slime over the deck, it had all worked out fine, hadn't it?
