The dragon reeled back. He could make out a thousand voices screaming in hunger and gaping maws full of gnashing teeth.

A familiar of decay and revival. While it is referred to as 'the Switch' it is not a coherent individual opposed to a force of dangerous space-shifting and reality-warping energy. It's creator was discovered to be the former leader of Pendulum, Queen Nyx.

It was called "The Switch."
Crow named it. It was a trigger of some sort set off by an event none of the clan could remember. Overnight Pendulum changed drastically: dragons disappearing and appearing, the numbers of the clan cut clean in half and further depleting, and an omnipresence of something not of this world staking out territory in the great cliff maze Pendulum claimed home.
It was almost magical. Serene. Things fixed themselves. Dragons started their lives over. Wounds healed and scars faded. The Switch was power and the power was used to erase a history that once was and write a new chapter of a book entirely separate from the previous trilogy. No more Clan of One Name or the sweet taste of Temperance. Less hate, less betrayal, and the blessing of forgiveness and second chances passed around.
Whatever caused The Switch was good and just. It was powerful. It was more powerful than any dragon of Pendulum could speak of.
Yet when The Switch passed and the traces of its bearer vanished there was no one to remember it. Nothing but the name of the event remained in the memories of the dragons who now lived different lives in Pendulum.
So it was.
non-sentient familiar of nyx who was conjured long ago. obeyed nyx's orders to protect raine at any cost, leading to the 'switch' events which greatly distorted the lives of innocents in pursuit of that goal. nyx himself at one point forgot who he was and subsequently that the switch was his familiar who obeyed his directive. when nyx remembered who he was and accepted responsibility along with raine's death, the switch was finally dispelled and put to rest.
