Once upon a time, there was a place, they said, filled with snow. It remained trapped in an eternal winter, and those trapped inside yearned for the weak rays of sunshine that they could barely remember. Dragonets born during the time this curse seized the land were called Winterlings. However, some of the Winterlings seemed a bit... peculiar. They were born with abilities, both beautiful and frightening, that allowed them to control the winter that raged around them. It was suspected, often, that power made a dragon go mad. As it was, the one that had cursed their land was a dragon that had allowed the power take over. In the world of magic, either you controlled it, or it controlled you. They were called Mages. Winter's Children.
Magic was a tangible thing. In order to control it, you had to survive it first. So often, the Winterlings were natural-born leaders, born to be everything they were expected to be.
Except for one.
Diamond had always been the runt of the litter. They thought he was peculiar, and perhaps he was. While the other Mages studied hard for their magical aptitude exams, he daydreamed of a world where there was more than just snow. He dreamed of brilliant lights, and bringing those lights to the desolate eversnowing land he lived in. This, however, made the Mages view him, a fellow Mage, as a threat. For they were merely no more than Hatchlings with power. They viewed the world as a game, as they had not yet suffered loss before. By now, they were treated as royalty. They had been so used to getting everything they wanted, that now with the chance that Diamond was going to bring back things that would make them useless... he had to go.
They exiled him, kicked him out into the snow and told him to never come back, lest he dared to risk execution by the Council of Elders, a fake little government set up so the people would not know where the real power lay-in the hands of the Mages. Diamond was dangerous, as he was more than a mindless puppet following the others. He had a mind of his own. Therefore he would not belong. Nor would he ever want to.
Magic was both a blessing or a curse.

You may know who I am. Or at least, you think you do. Everyone assumes different things. I would know, as for years I suffered from others' judgement based on something that I couldn't control. To dream was simply something so deeply ingrained in me, it was completely natural and always expected. After being exiled, I wandered to the Arcane regions, until I reached a forest of ethereal glowing trees.
