Xray’s clan was destroyed in a terrible tragedy back when she was only a couple of months old. The world around her had been set to fire and she had watched as everything she had ever known was turned to ashes. She was separated from her parents and other clanmates during the panic, but heard their stricken cries, echoing their terror throughout the lands now engulfed in flame. As smoke began to cloud her vision and fill her lungs Xray had collapsed upon the ashen ground and sank into a cloudy daze. Visions of flames danced throughout her head, their frightful tongues licking at her face, of gray skies filled with clouds of thick black smoke, and of wailing cries calling from an unseen place. A slight breeze tossed a cloud of smoke across Xray’s body, and she stirred at it's whispering touch. Opening her eyes slowly she squinted as yet another plume of smoke was tossed into her face. Opening them wider, the light of the fire still seemingly dancing in her eyes, she could make out the ruins around her. Only black and charred remains existed from what her home used to be. Around her she could still feel the heat of the ground where embers and small fires still lay dying. She closed her eyes tightly and tried to block it all out, tried to bring herself back to the home she once knew, but the longer she lay there with her eyes shut tight the stronger reality began to hit her. She could feel the beginnings of a mournful bellow forming in her throat and she pulled her wings closer to her body, wanting so badly for the comfort of another’s touch. The bellow rose slowly from her throat and rang out across the smoldering lands, long and sorrowful. Dipping her head once more and drawing in a whimpering breath, Xray, wanting to curl up amongst the ruins and mourn, pulled her front claws towards herself, but stopped as her claw touched something amongst the pile of ash. Carefully, she cleared the ash away and looked down at what now rested before her. A tiny pale rose, its petals still dusted with ash, peeked up from the lifeless ground. Xray let out a breath in awe and gingerly cupped her claws around the tiny flower. She leaned forward and dipped her head down to the flower, closing her eyes as she realized that besides her, this small flower was the only living thing left of her home. Memories of her family, of her clanmates, and the home they used to share poured through her mind, and she let her grief slip out in a single tear that trailed down her face, clearing away the ash that dusted her snout. It hung there for a moment, catching the dim light, before dropping slowly onto the petals of the rose where it dripped down and rested on the tip. With her claws cupped around the tiny flower Xray spread her wings to shield it from the ash filled winds that laced the barren land. She vowed to care for the small flower, and to protect it from any harm, as to keep this last part of her home alive. This small rose is now Xray’s most treasured possession and she has kept it with her ever since the horrible tragedy that struck her clan. She sees the life of the flower as the last remnant of her home, and in order to keep her home alive she must protect this last living part of it. So now, Xray remains guardian of the rose, and as if by a miracle, it has remained intact after all this time. Maybe the tears of a guardian’s sorrows, the gentle touch of her claw, or the whisper of her breath, although so long ago, have kept it alive somehow, breathing life back into it as a breeze gives life to an ember...
