Catalyst
"Like a flash of lightning between the clouds, we live within the flicker."

~~~
Legends speak of Energita, a dragon of unimaginable energy. They called him the twelfth god, the Entity of Energy, the one Born of Infinity. Born in the Shifting Expanse, he gradually grew power and fame.
But power and fame were not good things when mixed with an arrogant attitude. In his pride, Energita dared claim to be a god. He grew ever more suffused with pride until he did something unforgivable -- he challenged the position of the Stormcatcher.
A mortal, no matter how strong, is no match for a god. The Stormcatcher disposed of Energita easily. To punish him for his pride the Stormcatcher locked him in a cave made to drain all his energy. The cave was translocated to a rift in space, where none could ever go, and where none could ever escape from.
And so Energita was forgotten. Until one day….
~~~
The swirling tempests were rarely seen in the Starfall Isles, as most of them were repelled by the land's magical boundaries. But strangely, somehow, this storm made it past the barriers. It gained strength from the magic of the Arcane land and it threatened to devour the isles. It did not take the Arcanist and his assistants long to fathom that this was no ordinary storm, in the sense that it was more than a storm: it was alive.

As lightning rained down upon the Isles and dragons ran for cover, one foolhardy Imperial dragon crept out of her lair, magenta eyes widening in awe at the might of the storm. She felt a strange attraction towards the storm and she wanted, desperately, to get closer to it. She spread her wings -- which proved to be a fatal mistake as the winds caught her and swept her up into the air.

The Imperial screamed for help, but her voice was lost in the wind. She was hurled into the storm, flailing helplessly. Lightning flashed around her. Wind roared in her ears. She fell…and fell….and fell….

After a long while in the silence, the Imperial braved a look. She was still falling, but the momentum had changed. It had become gentler. The winds were dying, and the lightning bolts were no more. The Imperial found herself alighting in the middle of a huge cave made completely out of sparkling crystals.

"Where am I?"

Catalyst, as the Imperial was known as, was both frightened and intrigued by her relocation. How strange it was, this cave! Was it the eye of the storm -- or something else? She looked up to see where she fell from and suddenly gasped when her eyes met a solid ceiling. There was no way out, and her way in had disappeared: she was trapped.

Being a practical dragon, Catalyst panicked. She ran around screaming in circles until she was utterly spent, then flopped down to cry for a good while. Her tears sparkled as they splashed against the glassy ground, fizzling. Enticed by this new discovery, Catalyst's tears dried. She cautiously touched the puddle of water and received a minor shock. The realization shocked her as well -- the entire cave was electrified!

Before her startled eyes, the puddle of tears started swirling about, rapidly gaining in volume until a sparkling column of water spiraled before her in a vague draconic shape.

Greetings, child…I am Energita.

Being a practical dragon, Catalyst screamed and ran face-first into the nearest wall.

There is no way out. Energita said sympathetically. What did you do to offend the Stormcatcher?

"I didn't! I just flew into a stupid storm!" Catalyst spun around to face him, frightened. "Who and what are you and what do you want?"

Hold it. Energita said. You were not sent here as a punishment.

"Are you kidding? Of course not!"

The spiral of water wiggled. Then this is very strange. This cave is a prison for offenders of immortals. I…well, I was sent here because I tried to take the rank of a god. Certainly an offense, you understand? But you…you are innocent.

"Very." Catalyst agreed. "So how did I get here? And how do I get out?"

Easier said than done. I have never won my way free. But if you wish, then your only option is to go meet with the Wish-giver.

Energita explained that the Wish-giver was a jinn, placed in the cave as a fail-safe should the gods ever accidentally imprison someone in the cave, and was allowed to ask her three questions -- all of which she must answer truthfully. If she passed the test, then the Wish-giver could send her home. If she failed, however, the jinn would enact a punishment. That was how Energita had lost his body.

But I warn you, Energita said. If the gods did imprison you here, then there is no leaving, even if you win a wish from the jinn.

Only then did Catalyst begin doubting herself. Was she sure that she hadn't been sent here because she'd wronged the gods? She'd put radioactive chemicals in the Arcanist's coffee earlier in the week. Was that great enough of a crime to be sent here?

Like Energita, the jinn did not have a settled form. She was a spectral creature that flickered with light. Mischievous laughter greeted them as Energita teleported himself and Catalyst into the jinn's residing.

"What is it, Energita?" She carped. "Here for a way out? You know you can never out-wit me, even if the gods did allow you to go! Ha! It amuses me to see your pathetic form trapped here. This is one of the greatest dragons in Sornieth? Ha!"

Energita's voice was steely. I have long given up on leaving. I do not come here to be reminded of my situation. Here I have a dragon who accidentally found a way into the caverns. She wishes to get out.

The jinn spun to squint at Catalyst. "Oh! We have a new prisoner?" She chuckled. "I hope you know if you're imprisoned here, you can't get out, even if I helped you."

"I'm not imprisoned here." Catalyst said, trying to sound confident.

The jinn seemed amused. "That being said, if you've got the guts, shall we begin?"

And so the questioning did began,
As Catalyst sought to return to her clan
With a sparkle and a smile, the jinn asked
"What will a dragon reveal when given a mask?"
The answer was quite easy --
"His true face," Catalyst said breezily.

The second question inquired
"The more of me you have, the older you are,
The more of me you have; and death isn't far."
This one Catalyst had heard before.
The answer: "One's birthdays."

And now the jinn was truly impressed
No one had come so far in her test
But her duty she did stress
And so hardest was the question she saved for last.
"Often held, but never touched.
Always wet, but never rust.
Often bites, but seldom bit.
To use it well you must have wit."

It seemed to all that Catalyst
Had finally met her match
She shivered and thought
She bit her tongue and the answer came
"One's tongue!" She cried.
And the jinn smiled
For that was right.

"You've aptly earned your reward." The jinn smiled. "I suppose you want me to send you home?"

Catalyst nodded, then frowned slightly. "But what about the two of you? Aren't you two stuck here? Can't I use my wish to take both of you back to the real world?"

The jinn chimed with laughter. "My dear, I have no need to go back to the real world. I'm content here. Besides, if I did want to go back, I can teleport to the other side by myself. I've got magic, you know?"

Catalyst turned to Energita. "What about you?"

"This is my punishment." Energita said. "I cannot leave, even if you want me to."

"But that's not fair!" Catalyst protested. "You helped me find a way out. You should be able to go, too."

"If I come with you, your chances of leaving will become nonexistent." Energita replied. "I'm come to terms with my fate. It would be nice to be back in the real world, to feel the wind on my scales and see the stars. But that is not possible. I have made an enemy of a god. I cannot leave. But you can, and you should." He took a deep breath. "Wish-giver, if you will…."

Catalyst blinked. "Wait! I'm not -- "

"Have a nice trip!" The jinn chimed.

The world distorted around Catalyst, and she found herself back at home, sitting at the mouth of her lair. There was no Energita, no jinn. The storm was still raging in the distance, but it was now leaving the Starfall Isles.

Catalyst stood. Had it all been a dream? It'd all seem so impossible. Then she glanced at her scales and saw a bit of electrified crystal dust upon them.

No, it had not been a dream, she thought. The cave had been real. Her adventure had been real.

Energita had been real.

And if she had to raise hell to do it, she would find that cave again.
