A blank slate that CrossPoison and FellStinger created, the nameless Bogsneak was sent to keep an eye on BoltStrike- unleashing a string of unfortunate events that turned him into a battered and abused underling of the megalomaniac Imperial he serves. 'Nomen', the insulting title he was given (which means 'nameless' in Latin, for BoltStrike deemed him unworthy of an actual name), is actually more perceptive and intelligent than he lets up, and mostly fulfills his master's demands unflinchingly and unquestioningly. If anything, the constant outdoor experiences allows Nomen much more exposure and knowledge of the interactions between dragon to dragon, and he keeps the shred of magic scarf (that he had long outgrown) on him at all times. To nobody's surprise, Nomen is actually more intelligent than his master is and ever will be, but never would show it. Like most Bogsneaks, Nomen is looked down upon in dragon society as being godless, but the Bogsneak himself is unperturbed. To him, he would only truly defer to one dragon, and only one dragon can make him kneel- his creator who had imbued him with his Nature magic. Nomen's body, owing to how easily manipulable the genes in Bogsneak eggs are, was also imbued with the innate ability to completely resist any form of magical theft, making him the ultimate foil in BoltStrike's schemes. BoltStrike delights in physically battering him for that reason, knowing that he would never be able to access Nomen's magic however hard he tries. To BoltStrike, Nomen's presence is his ultimate humiliation, even if he has no idea what Nomen is affiliated to. In recent times, Nomen had become the reluctant warden of his creator(s), along with one of BoltStrike's commanders, whom the Imperial had tortured and brainwashed into acting for him. In his time there, he was Chou insisted that with his new beginnings, Nomen needed a new name, and thus Nomen was now known as Hēng 恒, a word for 'perseverance'. Heng now lives a quiet life on the train with Chou, working hard with the other bandits to carve out his own path. For once, Heng is happy and satisfied with himself, even if he can never fly again. He had no more need to run. |
