While Ness has many different areas of study behind her and is an adept magician, her chosen profession is foretelling the future.

Ness was hatched in the Sea of a Thousand Currents to a Matched named Philip and Catherin. When she was young, an Ice Flight Emperor killed her mother in front of her, but left her be. After this, she hated the Ice Flight and was distrustful of Imperials. For the rest of her fledgeling years, she was raised by her father. When she was older, she and her then-best friend Curiosity left to go travel Sornieth. They planned on going everywhere — except for the Southern Icefield, of course. Ness and Curiosity studied circuitry in the Shifting Expanse, metalworking in the Ashfall Waste, bioluminescence in the Tangled Wood, gemstones and history in Dragonhome, and magic in the Starfall Isles. They studied magic for longer than everything else combined. But then, Ness purposely destroyed a shrine to the Icewarden — who cursed her to freeze into ice. Curiosity flew until she found a mage who could help them — Darren. Darren couldn't reverse the Icewarden's powerful curse, but he enchanted Curiosity's ornate darksteel bracelet to stop the freeze as long as Ness was wearing it. Ness put on the bracelet in time to live, but not before ice froze over her eyes, blinding her. Curiosity had to claw the ice out of Ness' face, which scarred her. Ness wears a blue birdskull headdress to conceal her scarred face, something over her chest to keep her heart from freezing over, and, of course, Curiosity's ornate darksteel bracelet. Ness, Curiosity, and Darren all moved to the Zephyr Steppes in the Windswept Plateau for the benefit of Ness, where they adopted Pomona, and later they would move back to the Sea of a Thousand Currents to join the Rookery.
