"Quick, pass the egg!" Salv called, dashing past the cauldron. Kernall tossed the egg, stumbling over a log as the egg went into the air. Salv jumped to catch it, but his claws barely touched it. The egg rolled into a darkened cave, and time seemed to slow as the precious egg dropped into Baldwin's Brew. "No, no, no! You fools!" the elder dragon roared, coming up from the pit in his lair.

It took an hour to safely remove the egg, but in that small window of time, the concoction attached and seeped into the egg's shell. "Might as well be rotten," Kernall muttered, giving the shell a hard tap. It rocked forward before falling to the cavern's floor and cracking open, revealing a small, orange, mutated hatchling. Its wings unfurled as it stretched out. "What do we do with it?" Kernall snapped, "Look at it. Just look! We cannot take it back with us. Ruen will kill us," he continued, beginning to pace the cavern's entrance.

"Ah, now that young one, is up to you. Either way you'll be faced with the consequences of stealing Ruen's egg. I suggest you think hard on what you decide," the elder answered, his voice hollow with age.

He quickly retreated back into the lower cavern he'd come out of. Kernall's eyes darted between the mutant and Salv. "We ought to let Ruen decide what happens next," Salv murmured, "It is her child after all."

Kernall's jaw dropped, and his fear of Ruen engulfed him. "But... She'll... No...." he sputtered.

Salv reached out and clasped the hatchling between his claws. "Come Kernall, we ough to head back now," he called, moving towards the cavern's entrance.

He lept into the air, using his dark wings to carry him up. Kernall joined him after a moments hesitation. The trip felt longer than it was, with one dragon dreading what was to come. Salv glanced down at his small companion and grinned. The look of pure joy captivated him and he saw the creature for what it really was-- one of "God"s miracles.

They arrived back to their camp, where everyone was preparing dinner. Salv shielded the hatchling with his wing before calling out for Ruen. "She's in with Borin," Tamara answered, "I'd wait if I were you. He's in a foul mood."
