It still sounds crazy for him to say it, but Heldeep owes his life to an Emperor. When Zeta found him roaming the desert, the same way she and countless others were discovered, the dark Pearlcatcher, different as he was from herself, reminded Zeta of when she herself as rescued. Heldeep is still sensitive about needing help, as his sense of direction is impeccable under all other circumstances, but he will concede that it is very easy to get turned around when one is blind, in a featureless desert, and suffering from temporary amnesia and a head injury. If Zeta had not carried him back to the Schism, where Carrier diagnosed his condition and helped him recover, it's likely that even Heldeep, the explorer and mapmaker, would have never found his way out.
The day he arrived at the Schism, Heldeep could remember little except his name. How he ended up in Lightning territory is anyone's guess, especially because once his memory returned, he could recall that his home clan was in Shadow territory days away. Heldeep became a dragon of interest for weeks, not only because the entire clan waited with bated breath for the mystery of his arrival to be uncovered, but also because of his remarkable ability to read other dragons' thoughts. Fortunately for Heldeep, who wanted nothing to do with his newfound fame, Varei stepped in to rescue him. Turns out, the seer and the telepath had much in common, and they quickly bonded over their similar interests. Neither dragon wanted to be known for their powers, both enjoyed traveling into uncharted territories just for the fun of it, and their shared love of games and pranks continues to cause havoc to this day. Eventually, when Heldeep's memory recovered, he visited his home clan to say temporary goodbyes to his family and friends, and to tell them that he would visit them often from his new clan, as he was staying in the Schism for good.
Every once in a while, even though Heldeep tries so hard to prevent it, hearing all the voices from other creatures' heads can be too much for him. Sometimes he will retreat back into the cave beneath the house he and Varei share, finding a corner where he can find solace, with only the distant rush of water and not the incessant babble of thoughts he finds outside. Sometimes Varei will join him, and the two will just sit, thankful for the retreat from the outside and all the distractions, all the visions, all the sides of their powers they would rather not see. It's peaceful and hushed, the darkness is like curtains closing over the rest of the world, and the two friends rest after a day of movies, pranks, work, and time together.
