A young dragon walked through the forest
With his quiver and hunting bow
He heard a young girl singing
And followed the sound below
There he found the maiden
Who lives in the willow

He called to her as she listened
From a ring of toadstools red
"Come with me, my maiden
Come from thy willow bed"

She looked at him serenely
And only shook her head

"See me now
A ray of light in the moondance
See me now
I cannot leave this place
Hear me now
A strain of song in the forest
Don't ask me
To follow where you lead"

A young dragon walked through the forest
With a flower and coat of green
His love had scales like diamond
Her eyes an emerald sheen
She wrapped herself in beauty
So young and so serene

He stood there under the willow
And he gave her the orange bloom
"Girl, my heart you've captured
Oh, I would be your mate"

She said she'd wed him never
Not near, nor far, nor soon

"See me now
A ray of light in the moondance
See me now
I cannot leave this place
Hear me now
A strain of song in the forest
Don't ask me
To follow where you lead"

A young dragon walked through the forest
With a cleaver sharp as a knife
"I'll take the green-eyed spirit
And she shall be my mate
With her I'll raise my children
With her I'll live my life"

The maiden wept when she heard him
When he said he'd set her free
He took his cleaver and used it
To bring down her ancient tree
"Now your willow's fallen
Now you belong to me"

"See me now
A ray of light in the moondance
See me now
I cannot leave this place
Hear me now
A ray of light in the moondance
Don't ask me
To follow where you lead"

She followed him out the forest
And collapsed upon the earth
Her feet had walked but a distance
From the green land of her birth

She faded into a flower
That would bloom for one bright eve
He could not take from the forest
What was never meant to leave...

____The Forest seethed.

____It was terrible what had happened, but it would be a lie to say it hadn't happened before. The forest had learned that seeking vengeance was seldom worth the energy sapped. Usually the hapless dragons knew the sin they had committed as they watched their loves wither before their very eyes. Sometimes they even begged for the punishment. But rousing the forest in that way resulted in a decline in the entire region as the land rebuilt strength. As long as the young dragon never returned, this one could go free..

____He picked the flower. Reached down and snapped the stem where it met with the loamy earth. He cut short the remains of the innocent life he had already destroyed.

____Even as she felt herself slipping away she sensed as the forest fell into a shocked silence. Far behind her she could feel the life ebbing out of her tree; felt as they both were fading. She knew they'd be dead come dawn. Something felt wrong to her... Was her sense of time skewed? Had so much time slipped her by and the dawn approaching rapidly? Everything was growing so hazy. She didn't even notice when the forest erupted into fury.

____The young dragon was either heartless or stupid. The forest cared not which, knew only that he would suffer. He had broken the greatest taboo. Death would be too good for him. Every voice in the forest clambered to be heard over the other. The trees whipped themselves into a frenzy, demanding he be given to them since his original crime was felling one of them.

____He didn't know what was happening. First an eerie silence had descended; and now the forest was shaking as though it was in the throes of a gale, but there was no wind that he could feel. The tree crowns danced and shifted, forming horrific figures that pointed at him accusingly. He felt every hungry eye in the forest trained on him.

____He hunched down, too terrified to move, the thought of running never even crossing his mind. He curled farther into himself as the pressure built around him and the very ground began to quake. The flower was all but forgotten, bruising in one clenched claw.

____Suddenly all fell silent though the pressure continued to build. He found it difficult to breath. His vision swam as he fought to force air into his lungs. Thus he did not notice the vines extending to him from the trees.

____Thick vines wrapped around his torso and harshly yanked him towards the forest. As he neared the trees more vine rose to meet him, these ones smaller, delicate, and covered in thorns. The thicker vines wrapped around his arm, forcing it to rise. They squeezed his wrist until the pain forced his claw open. The flower tumbled from his grasp, but was caught by the small vines. The vines caressed the bloom gently in great contrast to the way they treated him.

____In the grasp of the vines the flower began to glow. Crushed petals healed and the stem straitened from its deathly slump. More vines cradled the bloom and the light became blinding. A twisted knot of thorns formed around the glow. The pressure reached a crescendo.

____The forest spoke out in a voice of the howling wolves, the creaking trees, the crumbling mountains,

____"We will give you that which you desired."

____The young dragon didn't even have a chance to scream as the thorny orb sprang towards him and burrowed deep into his chest.
