“How can one not gape at the heavens with wonder? How can one not feel the magic pulsing in the very air we breathe?”

The stars shone brilliantly in the wintry sky. Each seemed to pulse its own magical energy, this aura reaching Ascal down on the earth. He adjusted his tools and wrote down a few hasty notes. In the eternal dance the stars were doing, he could glimpse a pattern. Not for the whole sky, but for the few brightest, most visible systems he had been mapping. It felt like he was trying to drink the ocean.

Gil jokes that Ascal's neck will probably break one day from his constant skygazing. The priest spends his nights awake, and joins the morning rites briefly before going to sleep. Mathematical and symbolical papers cover his den, crystals suspended in the air to offer light. When not gazing at the stars, he goes through his messy notes and theories and discusses them with the other priests from time to time.
