“When is someone going to read my fortune and protect me?” he wondered aloud, softly, half-bitter. But there was a trace of humor there, too. After all — who protected the protectors?
He hurried along. The night was hot and close, breathing on his neck. The full moon beamed down, wide and watchful.

For as long as he remembered, he had gotten “signals.” The urge to protect came at random, no matter what he was doing.
Eating, arguing, laughing, drinking — the sudden whim flashed in his mind and was gone. He was a Guardian with no specific Charge, and had never gone on his Search. In his heart, he believed the signals made up for that.
This vision in particular had been striking.
A nubile, pale blue Skydancer wandering wild-eyed in the Scorched Forest. The vision showed blood rolling down her haunches, gashes torn in her slim breast and long neck. Her frantic screams rang in his ears. All was smoke and confusion.
The violence left him gaping at the dinner table, until Hokuto Seikun rapped smartly on his forehead.
“Anyone there? Or did the ghosts chase you out of your own mind?”
Nanto irritably swatted his brother’s paw away. “Someone’s in trouble.”
“And so you’re off to run again tonight.” Hokuto leaned close, no trace of humor on his face. “I think you need to get that fat head of yours examined.”
Biting back angry words that would only slow him down, Nanto surged to his feet and gathered his gear. There was a light healer’s kit and a few different weapons. The visions showed him much of what he needed to know, but not all of it.
“Be careful!” Hokuto called after him. “Don’t be stupid!”
In the brief instant before the signal came again, Nanto had time to wonder:
Why me?

But he found her in time, and that was good.
He didn’t always. Sometimes he followed his inner path to a pool of blood, a corpse. Or nothing at all.
The young Skydancer was trembling against a broken tree, praying loudly to the Arcanist. Her blue silks were in disarray, torn and muddied. She looked desperately young and alone.
But she wasn’t hurt.
Yet.
Nanto Seikun cleared his throat, trying not to startle her. She jumped as if she’d been whipped.
“Who are you?” she rasped, cringing away.
“I might ask you the same question,” Nanto replied. Looking at her pale scales, her delicate features…she really didn’t look real. Maybe she was a ghost.
Hell, maybe it was time to have his head examined.
Then she came near and cautiously placed a hand on his shoulder. It was cold with sweat and terror, but solid and real.
“Nadie,” she said finally. “I’m running from slavers.”
You look awfully well dressed for a slave, Nanto almost said. Then he added together her torn clothes, youthful innocence, and whatever dreadful horror would make a young girl run into a godsforsaken wilderness at night.
He looked away. He knew his brother would be teasing her already. In his mind, Nanto heard Hokuto mocking him for being softhearted.
“You’re safe now,” Nanto Seikun said gruffly.
“Oh. Thank you, thank you.” Nadie flung shaky arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. “But…why are you out here in the middle of the night?”
“Looking for you.”

For a while, he was lulled by her chatter.
She’d been cooped up for months with dragons who spoke no language. Right as she almost died of starvation, she was dolled up and paraded and sold to the highest bidder.
Nanto wanted nothing more than to get ahold of the slavers. His heart sometimes burned hot with vengeance. But he knew his brother would rumble (and correctly), “It’s not your place to right every wrong.”
Still, as the young girl talked, Nanto drifted into thoughts of his own lonely past, and wondered how dragons could be so cruel to one another.
All was well until they reached the path to the house.
A large stand of burned-out trees had fallen, barring their path.
That gave Nanto food for thought. Trees fell in the Scorched Forest all the time, changing paths, truncating others. The fire made this place alive in ways that other lands weren’t.
And yet…this looked almost deliberate.
He could fly over the rubble, but Nadie’s wings were clipped.
“We’ll take another way around,” he decided.
But the next path was blocked, and the next.
All the time, Nadie clung tighter to him. The smoke seemed to be growing denser.
Suddenly, as they turned, they heard it — the unmistakable sound of trees being pulsed over, a splintering crackle.
Then a howl, long and low, that sent an icy dagger through Nanto’s heart.
Nadie screamed back — it was one of the screams Nanto had heard in his vision. The time to change this poor girl’s dark fate was now.
He cast around for his adversary.
There, on an ashy pile of logs, was a hunched pile of fur. It was hard to believe that this red-eyed, drooling beast was a dragon — but his speed and fierceness confirmed the fact.
He lunged and Nanto dodged. Then the two met in a charge and felt, snarling and lashing and ripping, jaws foaming.
“Go!” Nanto roared. “Hide!”
For a long moment, Nadie remained frozen.
Then the feral Tundra struck Nanto a hard blow on his head. His vision flickered black, and he lost sight of the girl.
Though the Tundra moved like many shadows, Nanto Seikun knew there was only one. With a mighty snarl, he shoved the Tundra off of him and pinned him down by the chest. The fire lapped at the trees around them, pouring off smoke.
Nanto didn’t account for the Tundra’s lightning-quick back paws. Claws rent flesh beside Nanto’s eye. One of his horns cracked — with a sound like splintering wood.
Then there were new noises, another person shouting for him
Hokuto had broken through one of the tree-falls and was calling his name. Nadie was slung across his back.
Grunting, Nanto disengaged and stumbled toward his brother.
Arber lunged after him, but Hokuto let the tree fall across his path at the last moment.

Dawn broke, letting pale light in through the windows.
For once in his life, Hokuto was trying to show compassion.
He and Nanto stood over Nadie’s slumbering form.
Hokuto put a paw on Nanto’s back. “Brother…you can’t keep doing this.”
Nanto adjusted the patch over his eye, looked at Nadie, and shrugged.
“I do what I have to do.”
