Dartwings
Shiny Variant

Emerging from the hazy line between Plague and Wind, these unique spirals have developed the distinct coloration of the Windsinger, along with a love for all things toxic and poisonous. Bright, energetic, and passionate, they make for great addition to any lair, especially ones lacking a toxicologist, herbalist, or alchemist.

Although there have been hints that Dartwings have been around for centuries, it is only recently that the Spirals have surfaced right on the border of the Windswept Plateau, and The Scarred Wasteland. Living on the border, the dragons have developed an unnatural taste for the plague-originating Toxindiver, and the Banded Dart Frog. To normal dragons, these are creatures to be avoided, especially the Toxindiver which often carry a variety of harmful poisons. However, a Dartwing does not suffer any ill-effects from eating these toxic creatures. Years of eating these creatures have built up a natural resistance to a myriad of poisons, and the longer Dartwings are around, the stronger this resistance becomes.

Along with the poison resistance, a strange new pattern began to appear on their skin. What was once a calm, flat, seafoam transformed over time to include a deep jade, and a bright yellow in a rippling pattern. This trait became the most notorious indicator of a Dartwing, and many believe that the amount of toxins they consume directly correlates to how bright their coloration is.

Dartwings tend to be natural alchemists, and enjoy dabbling in potions, mixtures and (of course) poison making. As a coming of age tradition, hatchlings are taken on a trip to visit Baldwin to make use of his cauldron. A week before the trip they spend it gathering different materials they can find to mix in the cauldron. They also bring their most treasured possession with them, and as a show of letting go of their youth and becoming an adult, they dump the materials and their possession into the cauldron. Most often the resulting concoction isn't astounding or desirable, but there is something cathartic and exciting about the process and few leave the cauldron with any remorse.

The Shiny Dartwing is the most elusive variant of the species, and some believe that they are merely a myth. They are set apart from their species by their shimmering bellies. They usually dwell deep in the caverns beneath Sornieth. Occasionally they will venture to the surface during the day, but never at night. Rumor has it that the reason they never venture to the surface at night is because there is a faint, greenish glow that accompanies the shimmering sparkles on their underside. Being secretive in nature, they enjoy their solitude, but can tolerate small groups or one-on-one conversations.

Krobelus, the Death Prophet wrote:
BmsER6Q.png Krobelus, the Death Prophet
"What I've seen goes far beyond death."

Krobelus was a Death Prophet—which is one way of saying she told fortunes for the wealthiest of those who wished to look beyond the veil. But after years of inquiring on behalf of others, she began to seek clues on her own fate. When death refused to yield its secrets, she tried to buy them with her life. But the ultimate price proved insufficient.

Death disgorged her again and again, always holding back its deepest mysteries. Her jealousy grew. Others could die for eternity—why not she? Why must she alone be cast back on the shores of life with such tiresome regularity? Why was she not worthy of the one thing all other living creatures took for granted? Still, she would not be discouraged. Each time she returned from the grave, she brought a bit of death back with her. Wraiths followed her like fragments of her shattered soul; her blood grew thin and ectoplasmic; the feasting creatures of twilight took her for their kin. She gave a little of her life with every demise, and it began to seem as if her end was in sight.

With her dedication to death redoubled, and no client other than herself, Krobelus threw herself ever more fervently into death's abyss, intent on fulfilling the one prophecy that eluded her: That someday the Death Prophet would return from death no more.
