Lanval is a character from the King Arthur legends. He meets a fairy maiden, and they become lovers once Lanval promises to never tell anyone of her existence. However, after becoming a knight of the round table, Queen Guinevere develops a crush on him, and he rejects her. Upset, the queen accuses him of homosexuality. He tells her that he is already in love with another lady, and even that lady's handmaidens are more beautiful than the queen, thus breaking the promise to his fairy lover, and upsetting the queen further. They decide to hold a trial, with the assumption that if Lanval's lover shows up, he is telling the truth. Lanval attempts to contact her, but she does not reply. Finally, at the trial, the fairy's handmaidens, and then finally her, appear at the trial, and she forgives Lanval for breaking their promise. They ride off together to Avalon on her horse. The fairy maiden is never named. I chose to give Lanval the glowing inkcap skin because I think it gives the impression of someone turning from a human into a fairy. Mushrooms of all sorts are also often associated with fairies.
