"How does one best describe our Dread Father? Imagine a perfect, cloudless midnight, cold as winter ice and shrouded in shadow. That is Sithis."
- Lucien Lachance

It's a warm night during the tail-end of spring, and you're walking alone in the shadow-bound woods, listening to the mingling leaves and pine needles that whisper all around you. Above, past the obscuring points of the coniferous trees, the sky is frosted with a dappling of clouds that foretell another oncoming storm, and you can smell the fresh scent of rain in the air.

Suddenly, you catch the glimpse of a movement in your peripheral vision. You turn to confront the culprit, but the growl you'd been forming in the back of your throat catches dry. The forest falls eerily quiet.

There, blocking the trail no more than a hundred meters behind you, is the vague silhouette of another dragon. By appearance you'd take it to be a Mirror; average size, with two fanned crests crowning the back of its head and two signature sets of eyes standing out as white pinpricks in the dim. But there's something about this rogue that seems ... wrong to you. Its form reflects no moonlight, as though its body has been cut out of the empty black surrounding the stars and pasted into reality. Its wings droop like dead weights at its sides, the membranes torn to the point where all that remains are strips of flesh dangling off the bone. Its eyes burn with a primal, malignant hatred that chases all the warmth out of the air. These eyes are trained now upon you, and in this instant you feel a dread colder than you've ever felt before rack your entire being. The silence of the forest pounds fiercely in your ears. You attempt to say something, but no words come to you. It stares at you for a moment, before turning its baleful gaze elsewhere. On spindly, contorted legs the mysterious black dragon limps off the path and into the murk of the trees just as the rain begins to fall.

You stand frozen in place, unsure of what you've just witnessed. When you finally gather up the courage and approach the spot where the rogue once stood, you see something--or rather a lack of something--that sends you desperately running for the safety of your lair.

There are no footprints.

BIOGRAPHY

Legend says He roams Sornieth in the form of a solitary black dragon, visiting any soul unlucky or foolish enough to stray too far from the protection of their lairs at night. No one--not even the oldest and wisest of scholars--quite knows where He came from, what His intentions may be, or even who or what He truly is. Some skeptics debate His very existence altogether, dismissing Him as no more than a work of fiction meant to scare young hatchlings into minding their elders.

Most dragons consider His presence as a curse, fearing to even utter His name lest He appear and bring doom upon their clans. However, the Dark Brotherhood--the infamous cult of merciless assassins--would consider a visit from their Dread Father to be an honor among honors, for to them He is the One True Deity and the founder of their dark clan.

Ask any veteran in the Dark Brotherhood what they truly think of the Dread Lord Sithis, and chances are you will get the same general yet pious answer; Sithis is Chaos. Sithis is Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, for He is the sole remaining fragment of the Shade that had first birthed The Deities of Sornieth. It was He that brought to Them life and limb and allowed Them to shape the world as They saw fit. Yet even so, it was They who betrayed Their Maker; They who despised Him and cast Him out of His place in the heavens, and They who arrogantly stripped Him of His godly powers and left Him as little more than a shade to walk a world ruled by lesser, heathen gods. The Brotherhood shun The Eleven for this, denunciating Them as little more than squabbling despots unfit to rule. They especially think this of The Shadowbinder, despite having taken up residence within the Tangled Wood, accusing Her of fraudulence for wrongfully claiming the Dread Father's Shadows as Her own.

The Dark Brotherhood believes it was through His union with His mate, The Night Mother, that their order was first conceived. Cloaked in secrecy, the assassins of the Brotherhood pledge their unwavering loyalty to He and He alone, willingly striking down their fellow dragons in His name, drawing their blood for His pleasure. Their purpose, they claim? To offer to Him the souls of these slain so that He may eat and some fateful day regain His former strength--strength enough, perhaps, to finally silence His treacherous, quarreling creations, and retake the glory that should have been His from the very beginning.

RELATIONSHIPS

MATE: THE NIGHT MOTHER
The Night Mother is both Sithis' mate and His prophet. It is She who bore Him five children, She who sacrificed them at His beckoning word, and She who proved Her ultimate allegiance to His will as She lay dying, forsaken by Her clanmates and broken in the wilderness, for fulfilling the duty He'd entrusted to Her. He holds complete faith in the Night Mother's unwavering loyalty, deeming Her more than a worthy mate and companion. It is through Her hand He indirectly guides His Dark Brotherhood, and grants Her unlimited authority over His precious dark children. Her words are His will, and His will is absolute.
