“Zetki, I don’t know if I can go through with this…” Ground out a small voice. The steady crunch of leaves sounded beneath the words, as two miniscule figures steadily made their way forward, the taller of the two confidently leading the march as they dove through the air, catching on branches small enough for them.

Said elder one snorted, before leaning down to tussle the others fans, the appendages splaying out under the rough ministrations, as she responded “What’s there to be afraid of? I know the way, I’ve been there before.” She then leaned fully onto Karini, smirking down as she cooed “I just wanted someone here with me.”

Karini huffed, a light blush overtaking his face as he shoved the arm off his head, thus succeeding in ruining whatever attempt his fans had at staying together. The other simply giggled at the display, before striding ahead, once more taking the lead as they descended into the forest. The deep blues and greens stretched ahead of them, pine needles stamped into the muddy forest floor, dying the ground in a sickly blue. Above, the thin branches spiderwebbed across the sky as the surrounding area grew to a steadily the darker pace. Branches which just moments ago had barely been an arms width, now seemed to cluster, intent on blocking out every last hint of light.

The two continued, the slightest tickle of worry thrumming through one of them. Fog seemed to seep into the forest, entrenching itself between their feet as the two glided above the ground. It felt as though something was staring, and as the feeling continued, Karini whirled around. At his side, Zetki simply turned her head, lazily staring at the darkness as Karini seemed to prickle with unease. Zetki hovered, stock-still for a moment, before swiveling her head to stare at her companion. A slight annoyance seemed to curl in her eyes as she simply raised an eyebrow, the other sheepishly responding “I thought I heard someone,” he gestured to a section of the forest, noticeably darker than the rest.

Zetki blinked once, twice, before wapping Karini on the forehead, an unimpressed look on her face. “Are you serious,” she said, bringing her hand back to pinch at her forehead, “getting jumpy over nothing? We’re the only ones in this forest at this time, I doubt anyone else would want to trek through this mud for something.”

Karini simply gave a terse smile, anxiously leaning back into a relaxed, but still jittery pose. Zetki simply gave a reassuring smirk back, patting his back, “Seriously, we’re fine! Besides, I’m here to protect you, with me no one else could even touch you.” The former laughed, scratching the side of his face as Karini cheeringly grinned, not even noticing that the two had stopped their flight forward. She brightened, a soft look overtaking her face as she suddenly took Karini’s hand, lacing their fingers together, before bringing it up to her face. “Now you won’t be able to get lost,” She murmured, staring at him as he flushed, much darker this time. He let out a small, embarrassed grumble, before unlacing their hands. Zetki gave him a wounded look, before understanding filled her face as he changed it to a much looser hold.

Zetki let out a soft noise, before looking away. Karini blinked, before giving a small shrug, and simply gave her hand a small tug, causing her to jump forward, and with that, the two faes took flight, entangled together as they fluttered along. Yet, as they flew, she simply stared ahead, suddenly lost in her head as the pair ventured further. Giving her an odd look every now and then, Karini simply accepted his fate, as she led him by the hand through the woods. The once murky blues now seemed to bleed into a deep, grimy purple, pines no longer surrounding them and instead large, thick gnarled trees took their place.

Small pepperings of mushrooms seemed to grow on the base of the trees, marking just how far they’d gone into the forest. A low thrum perforated the air, yet whenever Karini tried to listen closer, to chase the noise that clung to his eardrums, it slipped away. Small sounds seemed to snap his attention away, small claws clattering against trees, the subtle breathing of something right there-

And yet, there was nothing.

Each time he paused to look back, small tendrils of fear worming their way up to his throat, it was always immediately shoved back down by Zetki. With a sharp word, a displeased face, and a stern hand, she would always snatch him back to awareness, each time seeming to grow more and more annoyed. Karini felt bad, of course, and yet after each time, something would spirit him away again. The glow from the mushrooms, the whisper of the branches, more and more it seemed to carry him away. Anxieties swirled in his head, but all he could feel was her claws, what was before a gentle lover's caress, now an iron grip on his wrist. He barely felt it.

Why… had he agreed to this? Zekti and Karini had barely talked to each other before, simply running into each other, not always even with an acknowledgement. Yet, here he was, barely aware as their leisurely glide increased to a breakneck pace, the dreamlike haze scarcely giving him respite and with Zetki dragged him along, her once dark eyes seemed to curl with newfound glee. Then, he saw it. From the maroon tendrils that made up the forest, a clear, stark splash of color. Of slate gray stones, and the dark blue pines he had grown to miss. However, as the shapes began to form in his vision, he felt a chilling sensation as awareness seemed to drip back into him, his talons shaking as Zetki’s grip never wavered.

As they broke through the treeline, the crown of leaves giving way as the clearing came into view. The heavy pines cradle the structure beneath them, the thick teal bristles stark against the dark stonework. Karini lets out a low whimper, the tight grasp on his wrist going to strangling as Zetki stares, her dark eyes blending into the shadows surrounding them. It was a far flung expression from the girl who he had left with, and it scared him. Zetki tried once more to detach the two, bringing his right paw forward to tug at her grasp, his growing panic mounting as even his nails did nothing. Small, circular marks etched themselves onto her paws, as they shook with the exerted pressure to keep it locked around Zetki’s wrist.

“Ze-” Karini tried to begin, before the pressure on his wrist abruptly stopped, and his companion turned to stare. Zetki blinked, before smiling, a remorseful expression taking hold of her features.

“Ah! Oops, I guess I was so excited, I got lost in my own world,” She said with a small smile, her eyes closing as she leaned forward to continue “Is your hand okay? I wouldn’t want you to get really hurt, especially considering how far out we are.”

“Zetki-” Karini tried once again, before she interrupted with a sharp

“OH! Look over there! I didn’t even notice that spot before, wa-”

“ZETKI!” Karini shouted.

Silence stretched across the clearing, the moon shining directly on the two as a tense heartbeat was shared. Karini panted, nervousness clear on his face. A red mark clear on his wrist, the thin scales rubbed raw, and he leaned forward just the slightest to cup it under his chest. All of the glee from before was gone, and all that remained was fear. He didn’t know her, he barely knew her name, so why was he here?!

Zetki simply stared at him, her saccharine smile crumpled into an annoyed look. “Hmm, looks like the jig is up,” she stated, a cold gleam overtaking her dark eyes as she took a step to advance, “But that’s fine, I got what I needed.”

Karini flinched, full body, as he stumbled back, the pure shock from her words cutting deep into his psyche. She had to be referring to him, what else would it be? Karini was the one that followed her, a stranger, into the middle of the woods, lured in by honey-sweet words and a soft smile. He tried to move back, to take flight again, but with his limbs frozen, and terror etched onto his expression, Zetki took her chance. The light thump of her talons as she moved forward, blankets of moss quieting her movements into a dangerous hunt. Her eyes, once seen as simply dark, seemed to reflect no light as she overshadowed Karini.

With a smooth movement, she swung down, grasping Zekti’s arm once more as the younger shrieked in fear, scrabbling backwards as he tried to kick her. His left leg made contact, resounding with a muffled thump as Zekti hissed in pain. Taking Karini’s arm, she yanked it forward, splaying him on the ground as he let out aborted sounds of pain.

“Stop struggling, there’s no way you’d even be able to find your way back-” Zekti snarled, speaking over the other sobbing as Karini tried to stand, each time being pushed down by his once-companion. Taking her opportunity, she smashed her foot into his back, pushing the air from his lungs forcefully out in a swift motion, reducing him to a coughing mess. Newly shed tears gathered at the corner of Karini’s eyes as he hacked a cough, tremors shaking his arms as his awareness seemed to waver once more.

Above him, colors blended together in a macabre mix of blue, red and black, a dark shape dragging his limp body along as he lay prone.

Everything hurt, his eyes were filled with dirt, and yet he couldn’t even lift a finger. Shadows crept along his vision as he heard a soft giggle, far softer than the voice of Zekti… Where… was Zekti?

The dark shape had gone, and with it the static fog that swept his mind seemed to fade in and out for a moment, as Karini could barely make out what looked to be, almost as well. A hole would be more accurate, as in the center of a ruined building, ancient stones scattered across the ground, was a gaping wound. It lay before him, a pure darkness stretching deep, deep below the surface. It was smooth, it looked more like someone had simply cut a perfect hole from the ground, but it felt wrong. In every way of the word, it felt wrong, with the impeccable shape that was in no form natural, to the inky blackness, that looked as though it was seeping out of it.

Yet, it drew Karini in. For all the terror and fear that bloomed in his mind from it, the void felt like it was calling him, an alluring voice whispering sweetness just for him. He desperately reached an arm out, nerves fraught and tense, and hauled himself forward. Again, he clawed forward, nails digging into the dirt as he slowly inched closer and closer. He couldn’t think of anything else, staring at the lip of the trench, reaching forward to brush his digits against it, and yet, he couldn’t. As he drew his hand back, it suddenly struck him. Zekti, her attacking him, dragging him, to whatever… this thing was.

She was gone. It struck him like a knife as the thought suddenly chilled in his mind. Karini felt sick, tears flowed from his irritated eyes as he hiccuped. He wanted to go home, he never should have gone with Zekti, and yet here he was, stranded in a forest, with a horribly wrong thing in front of him. He let out a labored breath as he lay there, the void lay before him as he settled further onto the ground, exhaustion taking root in his mind.

Karini wouldn’t be able to escape. He didn’t know how to get back, he was too tired to even stand, and she was still here. Somewhere, even if She hadn’t returned to collect him, She was here. The thrum he now associated with her was present, sticking to the back of his throat whenever he tried to speak, the haze threatening to wrap his mind in it’s cloudy bliss once more. There was nothing he could do.

There was a snap.

Karini’s head shot up, the natural reaction giving him just enough energy to move backwards some, lying on his hip as he stared. It was… a stranger, someone he’d never met before. They stared back, wide eyes seeming to grow to impossible sizes as they opened their mouth, to call something, to do anything to help the tiny fae and yet-

There was a push, behind him, shoving him forward into the depths.
A gruesome crunch was heard as his chin made contact with the lip of the void, Karini’s hands shooting up to grab at the edges desperately, trying to hold on to something. He clung there, hands quivering with exertion as his body hung limp. Faint shuffling was heard, as he barely made out two voices from above. One sounded distinctly feminine, and yet, he just couldn’t place who it was. They swam in and out of his ears, the emptiness surrounding him clung to him, devouring him, before-

“Having fun down there?” Zekti murmured, black eyes staring down from her position of a crouch at the lip of the maw. A smirk danced on her features, and her miniscule hands tapped at the ground mere inches from where Karini struggled to keep a grasp. He mewled, gasping through the daze.

“Pl… please Zekti, please ju-” Karini’s right hand exploded in pain. He howled, agony in his voice as his body slumped to the left, his arm visibly straining as his body weight slumped onto that arm. His right arm hung limp, one of the fingers bent perfectly back. Zekti smiled, a bright, cheery smile from where she was, before standing up. She existed as purely a dark shadow, the light of the moon obscured from her face as only her teeth reflected. Sharp and catlike, she slowly lifted one foot, ignoring the desperate pleas from the one below her, as she painstakingly put it down, before grinding her sole into the dirt and his fingers.

There was a howl of pain, before nothing.
