Natal was born in a gaping crater in the Abiding Boneyard, among a particularly vicious clan whose main focus was on their interpretation of survival of the fittest. Natal’s parents had been fire ambassadors who had a clutch while in the Scarred Wasteland, but had left him in the care of the clan. Natal grew up nameless and fighting other hatchlings for the right to the scarce stores of food; because of his upbringing, he never learned to read or write. He didn’t know that there was a life outside of the boneyard until his clan was visited by a light ambassador during his adolescence.

This dragon, a huge obsidian imperial who introduced himself as Kivalla, initially appeared to mostly be interested in knowing if there were any other light dragons in the clan. Natal hardly took notice of him for three days since he didn’t bring any offerings of food. But Kivalla seemed to take an interest in Natal and another young plague dragon after watching them get into a scuffle. Kivalla approached them and explained that he was a retriever for a Light-based group called the Order of Light, and that he could take the two adolescents to the Sunbeam Ruins, where they would be fed and cared for. Despite initial reluctance, Natal and the other dragon (who was named Tvabal) joined Kivalla.

Natal found the Order of Light to be a saving grace for him—unlike his birth clan, the Order provided clean living spaces in all of its many chapters, and there was always an abundance of food provided by the temples. Natal also slowly grew to think of Kivalla as a sort of father figure. Initially Natal struggled to find out where he fit in; some of the Order priests tried to sway him toward the path of priesthood, and one of the Order’s most talented ládamas, Sahimazid, urged him to try the art of light magic. But Kivalla’s influence stuck in Natal’s mind, and he finally chose to become a recruiter for the Order, travelling around Sornieth to convince non-light dragons to join the Order.

Being a recruiter suited Natal. He frequently went to far-flung communities with a pack of recruiters who used natural charm and charisma to encourage people to join the ranks of the Order. Often this meant spending months in a lair or village, offering food and festivity in exchange for a conversation about the Order's goals for Sornieth. Natal quickly proved a popular choice for recruiting missions, due to his exceptional skills in organizing events, and was a unifying force when paired with more outgoing dragons.

That was the pattern Natal followed for years, wandering around Sornieth and helping the ranks of the Order grow. Though well-liked by many in the Order and considered a valuable member of the organization, Natal rarely took to close relationships until meeting Maza. Maza was a fourth-year ládami, a practitioner of light magic, studying to become an instructor. Natal and Maza connected over their mutual dedication to the Lightweaver and the Order and made the decision to be mated a few months later.

At first Maza and Natal pursued their original jobs within the Order, with Natal going on a few recruiting missions in the Ashfall Waste and Maza continuing to practice her magic. However, after seeking permission from their higher-ups, Maza and Natal were granted a new job wandering Sornieth together to increase the Order’s numbers. Maza used her magic to enchant and entertain dragons around Sornieth, which proved to be a selling point; however, recruiting did not entirely fulfill her. Maza approached Natal and told him of a new idea that she’d had: that she and Natal, while on their travels around Sornieth, collect eggs from non-light nests and bring them back to the Sunbeam Ruins to receive the Lightweaver’s magic. Natal agreed and the two now roam the Tangled Wood for eggs for liberation.
