“I think I found our seire.”
Fyari squints at Solstice, who looks like she’s barely concealing her self-satisfaction. “Yes?” the imperial inquires. “Do tell.”
Solstice shifts her weight forward, onto the tips of her wings, and continues. “She’s a skydancer, Water-born, of noble blood. Married into a barony, which she managed basically by herself, so this is not her first tiger-hunt. She’s smart, observant, and a soft touch. A bit easily cowed, maybe, but I rather suspect it’s that terrifying family of hers.”
Fyari purses her lips. “What’s her name?”
“Asami.”
One of Fyari’s brows shoots upward. “Is she Mailanti?” Solstice frowns at the unfamiliar word, but Fyari hastily clarifies. “Where is she from?”
“Twilight Isles, I think?” The nocturne glances at her familiar, Muse, who nods stoically.
“Mmph,” Fyari hums. “Interesting name. What about her husband?”
Solstice sighs. “I suspect their marriage was dissolved for some reason or another. Can’t think of any other reason she’d be here with her birth clan. She mentioned children, but I got the feeling they were long grown.”
Nodding, Fyari gets to her feet. “I’d love to meet her.”
Asami is beautiful, though the youthful splendor is gone from her wings, and she is graceful, all delicate limbs and glittering silk trailing them. But there’s something about her that’s more magnetic than that; it is rippling and silent and touched with not a little grief, and it draws the eye and heart like a moth to the flame.
She is the ocean, in some part; not like Maiara, who is the murky depths, but more like Serenity, whose blood is a half-stilled estuary. She is stone, and cool balm, and the sweet flowers that reveal their heart only to the patient.
The tide ebbs and flows, but sometimes it brings blessings. Asami is one of these.
The waves part as she walks through the shallows, and in the distance the island sings - welcome.

Asami means "flowering or blooming soul" in Mailan.
