Two images particularly move me in
Theocritus. In the First Idyll,
the carved goblet still fragrant
from the knife. And in the
Thirteenth, the falling star
seen by the sailor, who from it
predicts a sailing breeze.
From a fine edge, or a point
of light suddenly comes a
fragrance or wind that fills
the space surrounding. Not unlike
the universe expanding from its
origin. Theocritus ends in the
Thirtieth Idyll with the certainty
that we must bend to the yoke
of Eros, like leaves borne
by the lightest wind.
The last word of the idyll
is missing from the manuscripts,
and is usually supplied by pnoai,
wind. In the esthetic of Theocritus
much as a body decays into its
parts, the story exists to support
its details. We ask beyond
why the universe is here, why
there is each thing in it,
there being no end to our
astonishment, or dismay. For
Theocritus the universe was simply
that which could not be believed,
toward which belief could make
no credible gesture. One
who feels this way of course
is wearier of argument. So
he returns us now and then to
these bare images yoked to
the most graceful language surely
by only the most mysterious
part of the mind.
