Though she was born to a different clan, her indepedent nature and some encouragement from her parents led her to carve her own path,leaving the clan of her birth and forming her own clan, starting with some former denizens of the Lightning flight, who felt the call of the crashing waves ocean more than the roll of thunder and the flash of lightning. While the leaps and bounds of progress made in the Lightning flight were undeniably impressive, its nature of industry over nature was not for every dragon. The band of wandering dragons, led by the eldest among them, a Guardian called Kaminari, were an example of such dragons. They felt more at home within reach of the pounding waves than within the cities of the Lightning domain, and that struck a chord with Amethyst.

She decided to join them, acting initially as a guide, showing them around the Water domain, as well as teaching them how to fend for themselves and build a lair in this unfamiliar land, although she deferred to Kaminari's judgement for the final word on any choice, as it was Kaminari who was the group's leader, at least at first. One night, however, after they had settled into their new lair, now fully built and ready to expand if necessary, Kaminari came to Amethyst, and declared her intention to pass on the mantle of leadership to her. Kaminari could see the makings of a fine leader in the young Spiral, and while she would be available to act as counsel, it was Amethyst who she felt would most effectively lead their clan. As such, from then onwards, Amethyst has led the Clan, and under her care, it has grown and prospered, much to everyone's delight.
