[ No Second Blade ]

"Stand down."

Iruka's voice was a raspy growl, the fire in his eyes and the way his hand rested on his katana was more than enough to show that the man was itching for a fight. Not even the night birds dared make a sound as he took a menacing step forward. The target of Iruka's ire was a dark-robed figure, difficult to make out in the gloom of a moonless night. They were there, obviously. He had heard the crunch of snow as they had walked, and the footprints left behind were much to apparent for it to all be just a figment of his imagination.

And yet now he as met with silence. Impertinent, maddening silence. He was here as a guard for Xiu Hua, his ward and his love, and he was willing to resort to premature violence if only to keep her from harm. With barely a sound, Iruka drew his sword, a polished sliver of bright silver catching what meagre light managed to force its way through the clouds. The figure before him made no indication that it saw this clear act of aggression, nor even that it had heard Iruka's previous demand.

"Stand down, or be cut down!"

Still no movement, and no sound. Shifting only ever so slightly, he settled into the familiar stance of combat. One strike. That's all it would take, if he moved quickly enough. Iruka was nothing more than a blur and a flashing blade as he darted in to strike at this malevolent shade. His sword sang through the air and met... nothing but more air? Where the mystery man had stood just a moment before, there was now nothing, and no sign to show that he had ever been. Iruka could only blink in confusion. It was there! He had seen it, heard it! Despite his certainty, the footprints he had been so sure he had seen were gone, the only thing disturbing the pristine layer of white being his own footfalls.

This was not the first time Iruka had been tormented by phantoms, toyed with by something just beyond existence. This same shade and returned to silently mock him, night after night, to just stand there and revel in his weakness. Every night he grew more and more on edge, and as he glared at the bloodless blade in his hand he wondered just how much further he could go before his own mind got the better of him and he snapped.

"Do you think that he's thinking of battle? Of ripping flesh and blood and glorious death?"

He had never heard its voice before, but from the very first whisper, he knew that at long last this phantom spoke, even though he could no longer see it. So much silence, only to be broken by infuriating riddles.

"Shut-up," Iruka snarled. He was not in the mood for dealing with something that might not even exist. His patience was already worn thin, and the night grew old. He would either have to ignore this miserable creature or remain here and miss visiting Xiu Hua... and there was no way he could allow himself to dissappoint her.

"He hears us! We have waited for so long. So, so long. He has seen us before, many times. Many times. But now he hears, and now he can listen."

Slowly but surely, the all too familiar shape of the spectre that had haunted him for longer than he cared to remember coalesced from the shadows. He wouldn't miss this time. Not daring to take his eyes of his target for even a moment, his blade hurtled through the air for the second time that night, but this time rather than carving wind, it struck solid, real flesh. Iruka cried out as pain momentarily blinded him. He didn't know how it happened, but the craven had drawn its own weapon and struck while he was... he was what? He had watched the taunting ghost the whole time, and never once did it move. There must have been a second blade!

"If he wasn't thinking it before, he is now. See how he hurts, how he bleeds. And how he thinks that we did it!"

Struggling to his feet and clutching his profusely bleeding side, Iruka scoured the bleak landscape for his tormentor. He had almost given up searching for the barely-there specter when he saw it standing by the heavy door to Xiu Hua's tower. No matter what, he wouldn't let it get to her. Heedless of his injury, Iruka screamed a battlecry and charged. No more nightmares. No more twisted visions. No more doubting reality. Here and now, he would end his suffering by slaying the one responsible. Over and over he struck the shade, and over and over it retaliated. He kept hitting, kept hurting until there was nothing for his blade to strike.

"What a fool. Doesn't he see what he's doing to himself? He can't kill us. Not now, not ever."

Iruka limped up the flight of stairs to Xiu Hua's lonely room at the top of the tower. As he stood by the door, his main worry was that he was going to drip blood all over her dress. He very nearly turned and left right then, but when his love opened the door any thoughts of turning away from her fled. The joy in her eyes at seeing him quickly turned to horror, then panic as she took in his beaten visage. He was cut all over, struck with a masterfully crafted blade. She knew that from what Iruka had taught her about swords.
"Oh, what happened to you!" Heedless of tarnishing her own pristine beauty, she gathered up Iruka in a gentle embrace.

"Ghost... stupid ghost..."

As Iruka let himself get lost in Xiu Hua's soft perfection, he realised something.

There was no second blade.
