Biography
The night wind blows over the “Sand Pits” situated in an area in the Shrieking wilds ruffling the pale feathers of a lone coatl as the brightly-colored waxwork wings, prismatic silks, and a shifting rainbow cloak are shed beneath one of the massive trees that shield the pits from the casual eye. The gray-toned Coatl takes a deep breath letting is flood through his slender form and ice-colored eyes survey the world around him without the obscuring rainbow shroud that keeps his frail form out of view of his fellow clan mates. It is only here when Minthe sneaks away that he lets the carefully-cultivated shroud of cynicism drop.
The heat that escapes the sand as the sun sets penetrates the outer layer of his body combatting the constant cold that floods through him and part of the reason for the brightly-colored layers of “armor” that he dons throughout the day. Icy eyes stray to the sky to watch the stars and the setting moon and he tries to remember a time when he didn’t feel the need to wear the mask that has become so integrated into him he’s not quite sure what to do without it.
He can’t.
Sometime deep in his history, Minthe is sure there was a point where there was a young, exuberant hatchling who wanted nothing else than to have people around him and to play with. However, every time he thought he might find someone who would be his friend they turned out to only be there to hurt him. Snide comments about his coloration or lack thereof, taunting when he couldn’t quite keep up with everyone else, and the relentless teasing. There were days that he wanted to play so badly with others, but the cold that wracked his body kept him buried as deep in the nest as he could manage in an effort to keep from shaking with cold that eventually led to his so-called ‘friends’ to stop coming because he was ‘never any fun’.
However, Minthe survived—long after everyone thought he wouldn’t.
As the seasons rolled on, Minthe started building up self-defense mechanisms. Before someone could say something hateful, he beat them to the punch oftentimes before they even spoke. He adapted a prickly attitude that kept people at length because if they never got close they couldn’t hurt him. Experience gave him the perfect plethora of cutting commentary and brusque dismissals that sent most scurrying away from him to find someone else to taunt.
Sometimes though, he spends hours alone concentrating on this or that little craft or a book he managed to steal from the library that let him venture into worlds where his coloration and physical condition didn’t matter. Where maybe, just maybe, someone would be able to break through and warm him. It was these things he would let his mind dwell on as he vanished deep into the night to the welcoming warmth of the sand pits and let it penetrate straight to his heart.
