"Open your eyes," The spirit whispers into her ears. She shudders, only clamping them shut tighter. "No. It's terrible," she mutters, her body shaking. "It's beautiful, Hecate. It's warm, gorgeous. Don't you love the fire?" It murmurs, the voice tickling her ears like licks of flame, "Open your eyes so I can see."

The ethereal force pries at her eyelids, ripping them open, desperate to see the fire through the Coatl's eyes. She peers into the firepit, the spirit elated but Hecate sickened. Her eyes meet something at the base of the fire: the hollow pits of an old friend's skull.

Her pain wells up into a frightened, hurt noise, and she pushes past the spirit to clamp her eyes shut again. She'd never felt so weak, so hurt, so... used.

"Wasn't it beautiful, Hecate? Who do we burn next?"
