Braen
Microbiologist
Apoptotic Branch - Head of Biology - Senior R&D Council Member

"Is there a reason you're telling me all this?"

It is one thing to obtain and possess power, but of what use is it without ambition? The blood of conquerors, warriors, the purest of Plague adherents runs through his veins. And yet, he cannot bring himself to care. Desire to live up to the reputation of his lineage? Fear of failing their legacy? He possesses neither.

In fact, there seems to be very little he can bring himself to express concern over. With apathy at its finest, he is interested in little more beyond ensuring the success of his work and his own survival. Bitter sarcasm works its way into his words when disrupted, and he is not a popular figure among the more sociable of the clan, especially so after the recent death of his mentor, Zorian. His penchant for running an argument into the ground doesn't help matters.

Despite all this, he is not completely without merit. Whether he acknowledges it or not, he is a testament to his native flight's adaptability. He has a strong pragmatic streak, and in times of limited resources, has been known to jury rig some rather unique devices in the name of survival.

His focus, however, is decidedly more organic in nature as the biology and genetics director. Technically the medbay is also under his supervision, but he leaves treatment to those with better bedside manners, more concerned with immersing himself in slides of various microbes and bacteria.
Quote:
  • Almost all children of Virius and Mercy were born scaleless, and Braen was no different. Right out of the egg, his unprotected skin was rubbed raw from exposure, and the gembond passed down from his parents already littered his gangly hide with weeping green gems. When he moved to Lightning, he was sanitized to prevent contamination, but it of course did not stop the progression of his own affliction.

When he felt his belly plates loosen and his wounds could no longer be contained with bandages, he knew he had to do something. In desperation, he turned to the clan's scientists, and they graciously replaced his failing parts with Lightning-imbued cybernetics. While he was now like so many others in the clan, it was a more extreme solution than what he originally desired. However, it did its job to hold the disease at bay. At present it only manifests itself in easily maintained quill-like crystals.

  • The clan's move to Plague under new management decidedly threw him off. He was aware he came from a notable lineage there, but he'd never felt particularly in touch with it or any draw to do so. It was't until Shalmyllyn took interest in his bloodline that he did, and only then under orders from her to undergo basic combat training so as to attune himself with his element. It was only partially successful; he's more than capable of holding his own in a fight now, but he's still just a damn nerd.

  • Formerly an enthusiastic apprentice to head medic Zorian, Braen's mentor fled after his parents died to the Arcane-Plague elemental horrors Krvni and Vadim. Branded a coward and traitor, Zorian cut off all contact with his apprentice, and Braen can't afford to publicly show any sympathy for his cause.

That aside, Braen was left to fill the gaping hole, and while he technically had the training to fulfill the role, he personally felt he was not suited to it. He still grudgingly (bitterly) stepped into the position until someone more qualified and (most importantly) willing could be found.

  • After his nest and lab partner Agripaa succumbed to complications caused by the very fungi she once studied, Braen mourned before turning to his go-to choice of poison - apathy, and even more time passed before he deemed himself ready for another nest. A joint agreement with the Bone Castle of legend, an experiment dabbling in bloodlines, led to a one-time creation of offspring with its queen. He's been told the four females that came of it are all accomplished in their own ways, but he's never taken the time to personally check in on them. The apathetic bad dad.
