Besnik was the only one of her parents' three hatchlings to become an Inquisitor for the Ice Warden. Barely out of her egg, the quiet hatchling did not want to leave her family and was fearful of the strange, cloaked dragons that had come to collect her, but she did not know then that leaving her family behind would take her on a journey to protect the Ice Warden and every dragon in Sornieth. As an Inquisitor, a dragon has a dual purpose. These dragons work to spread the will and ideals of the Ice Warden. Increasing the knowledge and connection Ice dragons have to their deity and teaching the rest of Sornieth about their great creator. It is rumored that the most powerful Inquisitors have council with the Ice Warden himself, but it is a closed circle that few ever interact with or hear of.Their other, and arguably more important, responsibility is tracking down Shade-touched dragons and creatures and terminating them. Growing up in the Fortress of Ends in a compound said to be close to the Ice Warden's lair, Besnik excelled in her studies, finishing in record time. Many of her instructors believe that, had she not been so eager to begin hunting the Shade-touched, she would have been a candidate for the upper echelon of Inquisitors and served the Warden directly. The she-dragon also excelled at attracting the attention of her peers. A dark and mysterious beauty, there were few as markedly attractive as Besnik so far from civilization, and though some of those dragons did attract her, Besnik felt that giving into such lustful feelings would get in the way of her destiny. She pushed down her attractions in favor of her studies. That was several decades ago, and Besnik now makes her way from clan to clan in the Southern Ice Fields hunting for traces of the shade, and taking careful notes about its development in Sornieth's coldest region. Every flight festival, she reports back to the Inquisitor's secret lair in the Fortress of Ends to gather new information and a chance to socialize. It is only then that she allows herself the small freedom of finding some willing dragon to curl up with for one forgettable night every month. Those dragons that she allows into her den sometimes approach her later looking for a proper attachment, but Besnik remains dutiful and brushes them off, leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake. The Inquisitors are supposed to remain solitary creatures, ready to leave or to destroy any dragon should the need arise. This rule is not heavily enforced - many Inquisitors have mates (though few have families), but she remains stolid on the matter. |
