Biography
ARTORIAS
the knight everlasting
It is said that long, long ago, in a glorious kingdom deep beneath the sea, there was once a knight.
This knight’s sworn duty was to protect the prince of the kingdom, who was beautiful and kind and beloved by all. The knight was so devoted to his prince, and the prince so fond of his knight, that some gossiped that more than simple loyalty bloomed between them. Wherever the beautiful prince went, the knight went with him, and defended his charge valiantly against all the fearsome beasts and vagabonds the depths had to offer.
But although the knight slew many monstrous enemies in service of his beloved prince, in the end he could not save him when it mattered most.
You see, while the people of the kingdom fawned over the prince’s beauty and kindness, and the knight’s devotion and skill, evil festered in the heart of the king. Although he was not a terrible king, he was not beloved as the prince was, and as the years went by he began to fear and resent his own son. ‘I must do something about this upstart prince,’ the king said to himself, ‘for if I do not, he will surely steal my kingdom from me.’
And so he hatched a terrible plan.
One day, shortly before the prince was set to go on a long tour around the kingdom, the king approached the knight. ‘I have had a vision, dear knight,’ he said. ‘A great danger lurks in my court. If you are not here, it will strike and many will die.’
The knight listened to this tale with deep concern, for it was known that the king’s visions often came true. But still he hesitated. ‘But what of the prince?’ he asked. ‘I am sworn to protect him. Without me by his side, he will be in danger!’
‘Never fear,’ said the king. ‘I will send two of my own knights to guard him on his journey. Surely that is enough to ease your heart, so you may carry out your duty to this kingdom.’
Although unease still clutched at the knight’s heart, he knew he could not disobey his king. And so he said his goodbyes to his prince and remained in the court, awaiting a threat that would never come.
The king had lied, of course. Although he had indeed foreseen a terrible danger, it was to come for the prince, not for the court. A ravenous beast from the darkest trenches attacked the prince’s entourage, and the king’s knights, having no intention of sacrificing their lives for one who was not their true liege, fled and left the prince to face its jaws alone. He was never seen again.
When word of the prince’s demise reached the rest of the kingdom, the knight fell into a deep despair. For many days he did not leave his quarters. But when the king summoned him to his side one night, he did not disobey. And when the king ordered the knight to follow him to a dark and secret place where no one would find them, he did not disobey.
But when the king thrust a sword through his back and told him it was his turn to die for his kingdom, the knight found he still had some fight in him after all.
As the knight lay dying beside the body of the treacherous king, he could feel nothing but regret. ‘If I had not left my prince, none of this would have happened,’ he thought as the light faded from his eyes. ‘Now he is gone and I do not deserve to meet him in the next life. If only I had been with him then… If only...’
But just before he heaved his final breath, a strange little fish swam up to him and whispered in his ear...
‘Would you like to change your fate?’
‘What do you mean?’ rasped the knight.
‘Your folly has brought about the end of your prince and your kingdom; there is no reversing that. But perhaps redemption for you yet exists. You could protect something precious. You could restore your honor. If you live long enough. Would you like to change your fate?’
‘Yes.’
Long, long ago, in a glorious kingdom deep beneath the sea, there was once a knight. And although the kingdom has fallen to ruin, its name forever lost to time, it is said the knight exists still. He wanders the dark places of the world, never knowing the comfort of warmth or sleep, still seeking the atonement that was promised to him.
Perhaps you will meet him, one of these moonless nights.
If you do, you’d better hope he decides you are worth protecting.
